What is this?
Hey guys I was woundering if you could help identify this for me. I just got another parts truck today. A 70 3/4 400 custom camper leaf truck. The option sheet lists H D rear axle and rear leaf. But does not give any more info on the rear. Could you tell me what it is and what the likley gears are. I am debating on weither it will stay or go. I bought the truck for the other options (ps, pb, and ac) but if the rear is worth keeping, I will. Thanks in advance for help.

looks liek a newer style 14-bolt, if you want a real rough count on the gear ratio do the spin trick on it. jack it up spin one of the wheels and see hwo many time the yoke turns. wont be perfect but it gives you an idea.

Thanks Alex. It is not a 14 bolt but is infact a 10 bolt. I will either do that or just pull the cover and count teeth. I just got it today and that is the only mystery I have with it.

That is a Dana 60 rear end. Probably 4.10 or 4.56 gears. GM put 4.10s under the trucks unless they were Custom Campers, whitch case it probly has a 4.56 or it is a bid block truck, then it would have 3.54 gears. This is just a rule of thumb and by all means is not etched in stone. Also special orders also got the buyer's choice. There should be a tag on one of the rear inspection cover bolts that tells you the gear ratio. Sometimes there is and sometimes not. You could count the teeth on the ring gear then the pinion gear and devide them also. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Thanks Wes. In all the rear ends I have seen, I have never seen a tag. I still have no idea wht they should look like. Maby one day I will buy a truck that has one. I figure I will pull the cover and count teeth. I can inspect the gears so I know if it is worth selling. Thanks again.

the parts book i have indicates the axle code should be stamped on the bottom of the left or right axle tube adjacent to the differential housing; it should be three prefix letters followed by five numbers; C-20 series factory ratios listed in this book were 4.10 , 4.56 or 4.57; don't know if this will help
