tranny xmmember question?
OK, I finally got my new transmission crossmember in, and the holes on the transmission don't match up with the holes on the crossmember...
Do the 700R4's have different tailpieces? This came out of an 85 vette.... I looked around a little in the FAQ, and found some info, but nothing on different tailpieces, so I thought I would post the question here Thanks Chad I can get pics if needed..... anyway, off to play golf while I wait for help , life is rough

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Chad, I'm not sure if I understand your question. You have to drill the holes in the frame to locate the crossmember correctly, but I'm sure you knew that. If you mean the holes are spaced wider on the trans than on the crossmember, your mount should take care of that. They make a couple of different style mounts. They both bolt to the trans with two bolts, but one has a stud that goes through a single hole in the crossmember and the other uses two bolts that go through the crossmember into the mount. Does that help or did I miss it completely?

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Sorry, should have been clearer...the tranny crossmember is fine...
it is where the tranny bolts to the crossmember that the holes don't line up... from what info I got, I think I need a new tailpiece.. here are pics and the bottom of my cab after being undercoated..... ignore the messy garage..... Thats how it ends up when my Wife goes to the beach for a week Chad

Re: tranny xmmember question?
I see what you mean now. Yeah, that's got to be a special tail housing for the vette. Forgive me, the last vette I worked on was about 30 years ago. You should be able to just swap the tail housing over to the more common piece, but you may want to check with a trans shop or at least someone more up on vettes. Nice looking job, sure makes me wish I had the time to fool with one of my old trucks. Best of luck.

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Oh and by the way, when you pull the tail housing off that would be the perfect time to swap the speedometer gears over to mechanical if you haven't done it already, providing of course you are not going to use an electronic speedometer. If you are, then never mind.LOL

Yep, I will be spending Sat trying to find a tail...try explaining that to your wife on the phone
I have a new set of gauges to put in the truck, so I am sticking with the electronic speedo Thanks Chad

Re: tranny xmmember question?
I've not had any firsthand experience with a 700R4 out of a Vette, but my son has a 85 IROC that we've worked on a bit. I know it had the boss for a regular tranny mount on the bottom side. All I'm seeing in the pics is the boss for the torque arm to bolt to.....no underside pics. I'll look at one of the tranny's when I'm at the shop tomorrow.

Re: tranny xmmember question?
The boss I'm referring to is what is seen in the first pic. That part of the tailshaft housing on the passenger side with the holes going vertical, That is what I believe the torque arm bolts to, unless the corvette uses some wierd setup for the mount. I looked on the 700R4 out of my son's 85 IROC and the tranny mount actually bolts to the main housing just behind the pan. If yours doesn't have this then I'm not sure that a different tailshaft housing is gonna fix your problem. But then again I'm not a tranny expert. I'll see if I can drag that tranny out and get a pic if it will help.

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Chad, Captainfab brought up a good point. The more I think about it, I believe in most applications the 700 and 4L60 have the rear mount bolted to the main case and not to the tail housing. There are some aftermarket tail housings that have a mounting boss on them, but if you can move your crossmember far enough forward you should be able to bolt your mount to the case. This is providing, of course, that the vette main case has the holes in it.

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Well then you might be stuck with fabbing a bracket that will bolt to what is available on the tailshaft housing that you can bolt a tranny mount to. After seeing and reading this thread, I'm curious what is used in the Vette. You might try posting in the 'Engine and Drivetrain' forum, maybe someone that frequents that forum has an answer.

Re: tranny xmmember question?
Your tranny came out of a C4 Corvette (84-96) and they didn't use a crossmember. They had a long aluminum brace that locked it solid to the third member. The rearend was independent, so the third member didn't move. I had trouble doing the exact opposite swap---installing a turbo 350 into a '84 Vette. I had to do some weird swapping to get that funky tailhousing onto a turbo 350 so I could bolt on the aluminum brace.
