Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

Hi everyone, newbie here. Does anyone know where on the engine area I can find the thermostat sensor?. I have a 71 with the 350 V8.

Any help is greatly apreciated.

Thanks

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

if you mean the temperature sender, its at the front of the block on the driver side near the number 2 spark plug

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

Cool thanks.. My drive belt broke off last week, which caused my truck to overheat for a minute or two. After replacing the belt I drove my truck a few miles to make sure everything was fine, and I noticed that my thermo gauge was not working anymore. It was working fine before the belt broke off, so first thing that comes to mind is my sensor went bad or something. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

If the belt broke, maybe it hit the sensor and knocked the wiring off. Could be something [I]really[I]simple...good luck

That's what I'm thinking happended, I found one wire around the power steering reservoir, that looks like it's coming from the firewall, but just can't find where it connects to.

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

The temp sensor should be sticking out of the drivers side of your engine block and will look like this...

oops...too little too late...took me a few minutes to find a pic on the net. GL

That sounds like it. I had the same problem once. My temp gauge went crazy and I almost had a heart attack till I realized that the wire had come undone and was touching the header.

The wire should be green.

By the way, it's screwed into the head, not the block.

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

Sorry to threadjack, (hopefully since the original question was answered I won't be beaten), but I just did a rebuild and the guy who put the heads on put them on "backwards" he put the head with the temp sensor on the passenger side. There's a threaded whole on the drivers side for the sender, but we couldn't get the plug out (kept breaking sockets trying) so I decided to just leave it on the passenger side. Will this give me any problems other than looking like crap with the line running behind the engine?

I hope not cuz that is the same issue I had, you can put either head on either side....I goofed and left the empty hole for the send at the back hole on the passenger side.........seems to work okay. I remember my 79 chevy van was like that so I guess I should be okay

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

I found the sensor last night, and there is nothing hooked up to it. The only green wire that I found has an flat end connection that looks like it wont fit. It started raining last night so I did'nt have time to mess with it. Does anyone know what the green wire end connection looks like?

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

That's the wire. It doesn't plug straight on, it slides on from the side. It's a real funny connector. Notice the temp sender has a tit on it that looks like the head of anail rather than a spade like you might expect.

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

just went through my couple of pics again and found this one.
Not too good because I had to zoom in.
Just like Tx said, it slides on to the side of the tip.

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

rophle1, You could always buy another sender and and put in the correct location. That way your wiring harness would still match up.
I have a BBC and have the OEM in the passenger side like factory and an aftermarket in the driverside head.

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

All i say is go buy the edalbrock intake and have it on the Intake the one on the side of the engine is nice but GM dose not like them there they like them where the inlet is on the intake cus the wire dose not get as hot or it dose not get full of oil or greese just look its a better set up and better off getting the engine wire harness cost you 139.00 but its well worth the truble just look how nice it stays out of the way and look where the ram hon it its just too close and to much heat

Re: Where on engine is thermostast sensor?

When I bought my truck the original engine was gone and replac with an later engine.(It had a long nose water pump and the dip stick was on the right side). Well I believe the temp. sender was on the intake manifold close to the carb, I dont think I had one on the side of the head. I put an edelbrock intake on the motor so I'm going to do what stsalvage did and put it on the intake.
