Re: Oil

for new engines and freash rebuilds i break in with 10-40quaker state then change to mobil one synthetic// old engines i stick with quaker state 10-40 regular oil because going synthetic after an engine has a couple of hundred thousand miles leads to leaks

Re: Oil

with the lack of zink in all the gassoline oils, I say stick to diesel oils. I run rotella 15/40 in mine.

Re: Oil

What does zinc have to do with lubricating an engine? First time I've heard of that.

Re: Oil

according to 'Chevy High Performance' magazine, only diesel oils and racing oils have the ZDDP, or zinc phosphate additive at a level to sustain a flat tappet cam nowadays. Royal Purple tells me that they do and always will. My 454 just received a complete rebuild due to the cam, the oil, and my own bad luck. 25000 miles and cam knocked chunks off the lifters, they got up into the cylinders, so it's now .020 over and roller cammed. Supposedly you can use GM cam and lifter prelube at every oil change with any oil if ZDDP content of your oil is low. Royal Purple told me that if my engine would of had their oil in it, they would have covered cost of oil related failure. I don't know how true that is, but seems interesting.

IMO no question is stupid only some answers are stupid and from what I can see none of the ones you got here were that. I agree with them all. Thiszinc content thing is one we all need to keep an eye on IMO. The are alot of good advice floating around here on the subject just do a seach and you will find some GR8 links on the subject.
As for my answer to the question I run Mobil 1 full syn. in all newwer vehicals. H-D in the bike. RED LINE in any thing of perfomance nature. my .02 RJ22

Re: Oil

I've alwys used Valvoline in everything I have ever owned and never had a problem. Of course, I don't keep things too long either.

Re: Oil

I have also read that the DIESEL OILs will also be reformulated to remove the ZDDP. Thanks to the EPA. So if you're running dino oils then get the GM cam break in lube everytime you change your oil.
