Compressor Question

First off I wasn't sure where to post my question so if a Mod wants to move it that's cool. Ok.....my compressor is a 6HP with a 30 gal tank. Damn thing only puts out 7.7 CFM @ 40 PSI or 6.0 CFM @ 90 PSI. From everything I've found that isn't good enough to do the paint on my truck. Anyone disagree with that? Is there any way to modifiy this compressor to "bump" it up to a better CFM? Really don't want to get a new compressor since this one has worked fine for everything else and this will be the only "painting" I do with it. I haven't bought a paint gun yet till I get this compressor thing worked out. ANY advice or info would be much appreciated.

I painted quite a few cars with an old craftsman 5hp 30 gal. Though it is a borderline setup I think you can get away with it as long as you use a conventional gun (non-HVLP) and using a good filter system to catch any moisture.

The only cheap fix is to use another tank in conjunction which will give you more VOLUME to paint longer with BUT the recover time will be longer.
Your continual CFM is dependant on the compressor/tank combo. the volume of air supply is dependant on the size tank.SO, You can paint longer with more volume but it will take longer to refill your tanks with that comp.
You can get a bigger compressor which will fill the tank faster which is the other option.

Might also check the rental places and see if you can rent a bigger compressor. I can tell you from experience that if you are using an HVLP gun it won't work because your compressor will be trying to catch up all the time and you will have to stop in the middle of spraying to allow your compressor to catch up. I have used mine to spray smaller items and there is no way it will keep up to paint a truck. I would go with a rental if its available since your compressor meets all your other needs or consider upgrading to a bigger compressor. I did read an article awhile back about using a second air compressor and plumbing both compressors together to increase volume that sounded like it might work. Just some things to consider.

you'd be ok as long as you get a properly sized gun. i've painted many things with a similar setup you'll just have to paint a panel at a time then wait for the compressor to catch up it's a bit more tedious but you can do it and have an excellent paint job for your efforts
