varnishing bedwood
I am getting ready to prepare bedwood for varnishing. Am looking for suggestions as to what type of varnish to use and would u use the same on underneath of bedwood? Thanks.

I used a marine uv resistant urethane on mine, I saw a post the other day where some one used automotive clear coat with good results. the main thing to do is coat the insides of the holes and the ends of the boards good. there are a lot of products that will work. Im sure someone else will have some comments. I was the one who used the auto clear on my bedwood. It will work, and if anyone tells you otherwise they've never tried it. I orignally put a marine type varnish on the boards, but it failed after a couple months. The auto clear has been on there 6+ months and it still looks brand new.... show quality!

I used Spar varnish, available at any walmart,Loews, or Home Depot, it has been on for 3 years,still looks good,I have had to do small touch ups though,where I scraped it.

If your wood has spen any time in damp climates, or in the weather, you may want to scrub it down with some anti freeze a day or two before putting the finish on it.
It's an old salors trick, it'll kill anything growing inside the wood. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Check out GMC Paul's web site - they've got a great tech tip on bed wood. Also check the latest issue of Classic Trucks Magazine - they've got a fairly detailed article on bed wood finishing.

'76 Sierra Grande (Orange) - hate isn't too strong a word. Kid who bought it turned it into a hot rod. '68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect. '59 C-50 - with hoist. Truck is gone, wife isn't. Nuff said. |

I used LP on my wood steering wheel, 2 coats and it lasted over 4 yrs. Still there but I got a differant wheel now
