67 K-20 Lockouts
Does anyone know if anybody makes an aftermarket replacement for the old style heavy duty spicer lockouts? The ones I have are the ones with the aluminum dial and six 3/8 bolts holding them on. I'm having issues with them wanting to stick, well, at least the left one. It will lock if I monkey with it long enough, but I'm not sure it's engaging all the way and I'd hate to tear one up when I'm axle deep in mud.
Thanks, Chad By the way, it's been a few years since i was here last, so to all the guys and gals I used to chat with on here every night....

Re: 67 K-20 Lockouts
If somebody has a print with end play specs in it, that would be good too, the inner hub (the part that slides on the axle shaft splines seems to have about 1/4" play between the spindle and the snap ring, I'm thinking this is the biggest part of my problem. I'm going to try getting some healthier springs from the corporate hardware store tomorrow to see if it will lock better. I thought about shimming it, but I don't want to wear the threads on the spindle.
I've had enough trouble with this thing. I guess sitting on the hill for the last 15+ years hasn't been good for it. I had to break the pin off and beat the hub apart with a hammer and brass punch to get it apart, it was bad rusty. I sandblasted the whole thing and it seems to slide freely now, but just not freely enough I guess.

Re: 67 K-20 Lockouts
Are you talking about a`67 or`72?I see you have a`72 in your sig.Either way,you can get aftermarket in pairs, but the Spicers are not made anymore. It`s smart to get this straight.Partially engaged hubs are one step away from broken.

Re: 67 K-20 Lockouts
One like this? mine were all gummed up when I got the truck. I cleaned and lubed them and they work like new. If you bury them in mud and the o-ring is shot they will stick shortly after. You can buy a new pair/new style on ebay for $75 most of the time.
Good luck with your truck!

Re: 67 K-20 Lockouts
Hi Mudder, glad to see you still have that sweet 67 of yours. I'm talking about the hubs on my 67 3/4 ton, the don't look like the ones pictured above in Cobinder's post. They are round and flat on the bolt flange, no recess for the bolt heads and use hex head 3/8 bolts. I wish I'd taken a pic of them when I was out there earlier. I posted some pics of the truck(s) on the 67-72 pickup forum. These are 1/4 turn hubs, all aluminum dials that stick out past the edge of the cap. They are marked with triangles one is red that has an F for free, the other is plain colored and has an L for locked.
I looked at the superwinch hubs on ebay, they don't look like they will fit, These hubs physically bolt on to the wheel hub, most use a snap ring to hold them in the wheel hub. These are a 3 piece hub, middle section is more like a splined spacer (splines inside), the inside piece (slides onto the axle shaft) has a snap ring that holds it back on the axle shaft and it has dogs that mesh with the outer piece. The cap has a splined piece which also has dogs that mesh up with the inner piece when the dial is turned and 4 small (3/16" or so O.D.) hold it in the locked position, which is backward from how i would have made the hub, but I'm no engineer. I'm not sure, but i think the front axle is an Eaton, closed knuckles, fill plug below the wheel bearings, typical of eaton. I took the hub apart and cleaned it, sandblasted it as a matter of fact because it was so rusty, greased it. It didn't want to lock at all, so I pulled it back apart and shot some penatrating oil into the grease, now it will lock, but I don't trust it to be locked all the way and I don't want to rip upthe dogs. I'll try to get some pics of the hubs tomorrow.

Re: 67 K-20 Lockouts
I use oil out in the hubs. The wheel bearings are as far out as I go with grease.Grease is what plugs these assemblies up.It gets hard and holds any grit it comes in contact with.If everything`s there, they should be fine.Is there a spring? If there is,even if it`s weak, that would affect disengagement not engagement.
Are you sure it`s a Spicer? The differential housing isn`t a Dana44?I know there`s a few guys on the site that swapped-out the axle for a newer unit.Americanrider is one and 3/4tonner is another that may still have parts.
