what's this hole in my door?

Passenger door, interior side, just below the wing vent. Looks like it was there from the factory. What was this hole for?

Re: what's this hole in my door?

That is a 72 only door. They put an extra screw in the vent window assembly

Thanks jsbgump - guess I need to come up with something creative to plug it without having to repaint the door.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

There is a screw that ties the inner and outer skins together because they tend to pull apart.

Is there nothing threaded on the inside of the door to put a screw into it? If not, just put a screw with a nut on the back to cover the hole and make it look like it belongs.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

Is this a replacement door? If so, new aftermarket or OEM? My aftermarket doors don't have the reinforcement piece that goes behind the door handles, so it wouldn't suprise me that they wouldn't have the threaded part for that screw either.

Here's what goes in the hole..... The clips slide onto a tab on the outer skin, the ferrules fit into the holes inside and the screws go through the ferrules and screw into the clip...

Re: what's this hole in my door?

Someone definitely replaced that door at some point.I hope that whatever fix you do is reversible as those are becoming more rare all the time.I felt very fortunate to find an original in good shape for mine.
Very nice truck btw!

Re: what's this hole in my door?

I would like to know where to get these screws also. My '72 is a Custom Deluxe with the original doors and both driver and passenger door has these holes. Thanks for the info cuz I been scratching my head as to what these were for also, LOL!

Boy, you guys like to drag 'em back from the dead..... I don't know if any of the vendors sell them or not. You may have to scrounge some from a trashed door.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

Just install a small plastic or chrome cover in the hole. I replaced the wing window on my driver's side and must have lost the clip, cause the screw won't bite on anything anymore. So, I'll just get a small chrome cap. Problemo solved.

Unless you are going for a 100 points restoration, no one will know. If someone does notice it, tell em the chrome caps is a very rare option.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

Hey guys, I will beat this trivial horse to death with pics from my 3 trucks, and all 3 are different!

Pic 1 and 2. My '70 GMC Jimmy Custom. The nifty little plastic deelie must be part of the CST package. Definitely original doors.

Pic 3. My '71 Chevy K20. No screws at all, don't know if the doors ever were replaced-- it would have been decades ago!

Pic 4. My '72 GMC C2500. Screw setup like pictured above in LocDoc's pic. Definitely original doors.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

the blazers and jimmy's had them from the first year in 1970 with the plastic ferrule and the trucks didn't get them intall 72 with the chrome ferrule. they were too hold the inside panel and outside skin tight becuase the spot welds would break right under the wing window.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

My '71 has a '72 driver's door. I'm guessing it's original since the truck was built in July '71, and it's probably one of the last ones made before they started cranking out '72's. There's no indication that the door was ever replaced.

Re: what's this hole in my door?

The doors on my 70 are both "sprung"
I wonder if you could make & weld a tab on there and pull 'em back together with those screws?
