Re: Gas Tank Removal Questions

It can be done without removing the bed, but be prepaerd to be huddled under your truck in awkward positions for 30 minutes at a time while you try to get the lines off and back on again. Then expect to be sore from it for hours after, and also taking breaks every 20 minutes or so because the gas fumes coming off the tank while you're crouched under there will nearly make you sick after a while.

Ive dropped my tank twice, and it was 10 times easier when we pulled the bed first.

Re: Gas Tank Removal Questions

bed is fairly easy to pull, I pulled mine with plenty of help from this forum. 8 bolts to the frame. Unplug the taillights and license plate lights, check for a ground stap to frame(mine didn't have one) and get a strong person on each corner, and lift it off. Lol

Speaking from experience: Do not try this without FIRST taking the bed off its simple but you will need at least 4 strong guys.

Anyone else have this?

Re: Gas Tank Removal Questions

here is a dumb question, but where does the tank wire harness go to? I know it hooks up on the sending unit, but where does the other end attach? Is it a ground? Power? Anybody got a pic or diagram? I pulled some wires after a little wire fire and now the engine is not getting fuel!

Re: Gas Tank Removal Questions

What is the size of those bolts that hold the gas tank? I am going to replace my gas tank and I thought I would replace the bolts with stainless steel bolts. Thanks, Al

Re: Gas Tank Removal Questions

Just to clarify this 10 year old thread, the 87 1 ton tank bolts are tough to get to unlike all of the other trucks. There is a frame cross member in the way and those tank straps do NOT come with the captive nut. I've pulled hundreds of tanks and these ones are brutal to remove even with the bed off. By the way, the bolt size is 3/8" with a 9/16" hex head.

Ground goes from the sender ring to the frame except the TBI trucks that have a harness going through the top of the sender into the tank with a ring terminal on the end of the ground wire.

The sender wire itself goes to a pigtail on the RH frame rail. On single and dual tank systems the pigtail wire on the RH frame rail goes to the bulkhead plug.
On 73-80 dual tanks both sender wires go to the dash switch and one wire goes back to the RH frame rail pigtail wire.
On 81-91 dual tanks the sender wires go to the valve and one wire goes to the RH frame rail pigtail wire.
TBI trucks have a 2 position Weatherpak disconnect and a ring terminal ground on the frame.
