Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

After having a weekend mudding in an old TOY, and it being stick, Ive fallin for the charm of slamming through the gears.

And since my truck has no transmission (originally a Turbo 350), I was wondering the mods needed to the cab and steering column to make it 4 on the floor friendly, if I were to go that way.

I cant find the thread anymore where I saw this, and the search is being useless to me tonight, or maybe its just too early for my brain, either way...

Anybody tried this?

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

as far as the floor its just cutting a hole but its a pita to get the clutch setup right unless you get it from a 67-72 truck and you can just get a colum from a manual truck

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

Ill go dig up my classic-trucks-parts mag, I think they have clutch parts in there. Didnt think about that.

Too bad the local junk yards are always dry on our trucks, never seen one around.

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

I just did the exact same thing you are thinking about doing. I went from a 250 inline and the granny tranny to a 460 BBC with a Muncie M-22. There will be some mods, but not too many. The only real issue will be the bellcrank. Actually, for you, it might be a bit harder because you are now an auto (I just realized that you don't have a clutch pedal. Since most of these old trucks had that granny low 4 speed, all you need to do is take all the parts off of one in a wrecking yard and put it on yours. It's actually easier than you may think. The bell crank will still be the hardest part. You will probably have to do what I did, which is cut and relocate one of the z bar arms because the angle for the old setup wont be right. What sucks is that it's hardened steel. You will need a pretty hot welder. If you have a high hump, linkage won't be an issue....it will clear with no problem. Let me know if you are really serious and I can get you some more info.

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

It's a pain in the ass to get the crossmember out of another truck... they're full of rivets and aren't easy to get to, unless the motor and tranny are out. I caught my truck on fire torching them out

You actually don't need a manual tranny crossmember. The crossmember used for the granny 4 speeds are mounted quite a bit forward and wont work farther back. I used a crossmember out of a 3/4 ton with a TH400 on my M-22 and it worked perfect. I just had to get it centered and drill some holes. You will definately have a driveline issue though. I was able to take my beefy one piece with a slip yoke and have it cut down to have the yoke attached to the driveline like a car is. It's now bullet proof and you can see by its size.

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

Do the 4 speeds use the "up front" crossmember (bolts to belhousing).... or one in the back (under the tailshaft) like an automatic?

3 speeds and granny 4 speeds use the belhousing crossmember, correct? So a car style 4 speed would need a tailshaft crossmember?

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

If you are going to use the granny first gear SM465 you will need to put in a "high hump" floor. To do that...you will need to cut a hole in the floor and drill holes for the bolts that hold down the hump. Then you just have to buy the floor hump.Thats the mod to the cab you will have to do

I found a very good deal on a manual transmission column for you.

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

My Gosh.....why would you want a "3 on the tree"????? Put the linkage on the floor. You will need to do some fab work on the shifter arm because, if you have a bench seat like I do, it's a long ways from the shifter to the top of your seat.

To answer another question......The granny 4 speeds are very short which is why the crossmember is almost under the firewall. You will have to use the style that goes under the tailshaft. You are not limited to a truck x-member though. Before I used the GMC one I had, I threw a '68 Camaro x-member under there and it would have worked with no mods. The only thing is that you may have needed to shim it a bit to get the angle you were looking for.

If you are thinking about any kind of a close ratio 4 speed like a Munice 21 or 22, stay off the column shift cuz you will look funny going down the road trying to shift fast enough....people might think you are having a medical event!!!!! LOL

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

Another option you might want to do is keep it as an automatic and put a floor shifter kit on it.

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

That's a good point 72 cheyenne, a buddy of mine has a B&M Truck Meaga shifter in his truck on the floor, & It's a blast to manually hit the gears at any RPM you want, if I didn't have a fancy polished column shifter IDIDIT Column, I'd definetely put one of those on the floor!

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

So the current trans crossmember wont fit up?

Im just planning this btw, no were near buying parts. Close to having enough for a motor though, sbc 350

Im not goin for a short ratio 4 speed, Its gonna be my DD to work and school, all of which is highway driving pretty much. And no 3 on the tree for me.

What was the manual trans for the trucks, the 400?

Re: Converting an auto trans truck to stick?

Seems to me that a auto crossmember would work as the position is the same for car manuals at least.

Is ther a difference between car and truck transmissions?

I plan to use a crossmember from a V-8 auto. Once the motor/tranny is in, I will square it up and bolt it in.
