Pickup Bed
What are the best options for wood for a LWB. Also, I think the boards should measure 1" x 8". I was also wondering about maybe transplanting a metal bed from a newer truck. Just wondering what all of my options are.

Re: Pickup Bed
Options are only limited by your taste. The factory wood was yellow pine with a painted mixture of black paint and some type of weather resistant solution. The name of the product has slipped my mind. In any case, the yellow pine installed in the bed at that time came from Old Growth forests and was more resistant to the elements, due to the maturity of the trees. The yellow pine available today is from reforested trees and is not as tolerant to the elements.
If you go with Oak, go with white oak over red oak, because white oak has a tighter grain and is more resistant to the elements. Use of a high solids, high quality marine-grade spare varnish or other marine-grade finish will give the best results and longevity. If you are going for originality, go this route: Last edited by LILRED66; 06-03-2007 at 01:33 PM. |

Re: Pickup Bed
A few photos of my '65 Chevy C10 lwb fleetside with Birch and 4 coats of clear satin marine spar varnish. 19SEXY5 also has the stealth tailgate latches, in lieu of the factory tailgate banger chains.

Re: Pickup Bed
I know this is off topic, but is that some type of strut that is holding your tailgate?
