Question Oil pump bolt

I searched for info on this, and now I have more questions!!
1. do I need to pack the pump with Vaseline, and if so do I just pack it in the small hole (out let)?
2. I torque it to 65ft lb with locktite, dry, or oil on the threds.

I did put a little oil in the pump to lube it up some.

I take the 4 bolts out to take the pump apart. Soak it in new oil overnite. Put it together and on the motor. Just before i am ready to fire the fresh motor I use an oil pump primer to prime the motor till i have oil preasure and see oil coming out of the rocker arms.
I dont use vasoline at all. I put some locktite on the threads and torque it.

I didn't use loctite or soak it in oil, although now that I think about it I guess it wouldn't have hurt. Did it a year ago and haven't had any problems.

Not sure what you're using for engine ass'y lube - I use Lubriplate #105 and have for years - generally I pack up the pump with this before I bolt it on. Remember, you'll be pre-oiling the engine before starting, so it won't be dry. I wouldn't be a big fan of Vasaline for this.

Lots of folks have different opinons on Loctite on the main bolts/studs and rod bolts - but it's not generally recommended. People do use Vaseline or ARP lubricant (with ARP studs/bolts only).

I assumed you installed it dry, torque to 65ftlb, then primed it before starting?

I didn't prime it, but it wasn't a rebuilt motor. Are you supposed to prime it no matter what?

To be honest, I haven’t used any ass'y lube. The short block was assembled at the shop. But I’ll check- I think I have some of the Lubriplate 105.
So just squeeze some in the out let hole and I should be good. So should I torque the bolt with dry or oiled threads?

Ah, no worries. If you haven't bolted on the heads, I would put a little Lubriplate or GM EOS on the bores.

Yep, just squeeze it in the hole to be sure it's never dry. If it's an ARP bolt, then you should use ARP lube - anything else should be oil or Vasaline. You won't get proper torque with a dry bolt.

Thanks for the tip Bill! I haven’t bolted on the heads yet, but was planning to soon. (I just got my head gaskets Saturday)

Just remember that wet = good I would take a little oil can with a 50-50 mix of oil and EOS and wet all the seals, etc. - just douse the thing. And of course, lots and lots of cam lube!

No lock washers on torqued fastners - the torque prevents loosening. Seems kinda scary...but it works.

If its not a brandnew motor you dont need to prime.

I respectuflly disagree. Any engine that's sat for any period of time should be primed before starting. It only takes a few minutes, and there's NO downside to doing it.

Most of what causes problems in crate engines, rebuilts, etc. is stuff that's dry on startup - dry cams, dry seals, dry bores, dry valves, etc. Make sure stuff is wet!
