Re: My 68 custom project

Yeah, that is a little out of the way. I have discussed how to fix mine, I am just putting it off. I am scared of screwing it up. This picture shows what I Have to fix. The guy had it out back of his house under some trees and a limb got it. It landed right in the middle of the hood.

If you massage the center ridge back into shape the rest should follow pretty good . I guess you might as well try what have you got to lose ? Worse case you have to locate another hood . Surely someone close to you has one .

Re: My 68 custom project

I have 3 or 4 other hoods that are perfect, but they are all 71 and 72 hoods. Worse case, I may have to attempt to modify the front of one of those hoods. I think I can fix this one though. I just need a torch to apply some heat and pressure to put it back in shape.

Right on !! Don't put a 71-72 hood on it . That will ruin the looks of the 68!! The hood on the 68 is way cooler in my eyes ! 68's Rule!!!!!!!

Re: My 68 custom project

I agree, I got all that other 71 and 72 stuff for free but I still went out and bought that front cap. My truck is actually a 71 gmc long bed, but when I am done it will be a 68 chevy short bed. I even bought some new fenders.

Re: My 68 custom project

Thanks, me either. My engine is all done sitting on a stand in front of my truck. I think I jumped the gun with it but I had all the parts to do it. If you click my link, you can take a look at most of what I have done to it so far.

Re: My 68 custom project

Don't heat your hood to repair it!!!!!!!!!!! Just give it some sharp blows right in the ridge area or put something under the hood to push up in the ridge, maybe on top of the air cleaner and apply slight pressure down and watch the top of the hood as you do so until the ridge is pushed out flat. You may have to lightly hammer the ridge from the top of the hood to "relax" the molecules in the metal. Give it a try and let me know how it worked out for you. By the way, I hate long beds but I love your truck the way you have it set up.

Re: My 68 custom project

My hood was bent down in the middle also. I laid the hood on the garage floor onto three layers of cardboard, then took a piece of 1" square stock that was about 24" long, set into the crown and banged down on the bar to bring the hood crown back up. It took a lot of banging and I made a few little dents in the crown while getting the big dent out but I moved it back to almost where it was supposed to be.

I will have to try that, I too do not like long beds. My cab is from a long wheel base truck, but I used a short frame to make a short bed.

Bob68327, what size/brand are those rear tires? Not too many manufacturers make a tall enough tire that is big enough for an 11" wide wheel.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

295-60-15? I've seen 275-60's & 295-50's but no 295-60's. I'll look into that one. They also used to offer a 285-70 but have since discontinued that one.
