ecu placement

ok my searching has come up empty. You guys that have done TBI conversions, where did you place the ECU? have you run it inside or in some sort of sealed box outside? Thanks for the help.

i'm just gonna chip in here, since we GenII and GenIII swap guys can relate.

i see a lot of guys tucking their ECU/PCM over in the cubby (or on fender) near the heater core. it's pretty much out of harm/splash way - but just to be safe, you should always mount with the wire connectors facing *down* so water won't pool up inside them. Most guys I see mount at a downward angle.

i'm deleting my heater core, so i've got some delete plates i'm installing till i have hte experience needed to shave the firewall. i'm just punching a 1/25" hole in the firewall and mounting the PCM under the glove box.

anyone got any pics? here is another ? i am converting from manual to auto but i have this nice hole in my firewall where the clutch rod went, is there a seal or plate that covers this hole?

yep. i got mine from GMC Pauls, it was plastic. they only had a couple left, and i think they were salvage yard and/or swap meet scores. they were not advertised at the site, i asked them about it, they had a couple, and were cool enough to send me one! just another reason those guys are seriously one of the BEST vendors on the board to do business with.

Sorry no pictures, but TBI/TPI computers should be placed inside the car in a dry spot. They are not weather proof like LT1 and newer ECM/PCMs. You can mount them about any place as long as you have enough wire.

where did you come in with the wireing?

I drilled another hole near the other holes that feed the vac hoses and the exterior a/c door under the cowl. This was at the back of the engine above the valve cover. I also rerouted the ac fan blower relay to the other side of the box behind the a/c distibution housing. I can still takes pics of that but not until tomorrow.


By the way-----this is for an a/c cab, don't know if the bracket will fit non a/c

I mounted my ecu under my center console. My truck had a small plate just to the right (towards the center) that I removed to run the large loom of wires through.

When I install the LS1 in the 68 I'll probably mount it over near the heater core, cause. Hopefully that will make some of the wire placement a little easier since that is where they're mounted in the F-bodies.

awsome i am using the factory harness so I will probably going through the fire wall and mounting on the heater case as well. Just hard to tell at this point where to put the hole since EVERYTHING is out of the cab.
