292 and 475 auto overdrive tranny? WIW

I have a neighbor that says he has a 292 six with a four speed auto overdrive tranny called a 475? He was a tranny rebuilder and seems to know what he is talking about when he is coherent (long story). He is moving soon and thought it might be a nice combo to have on standby. Any idea what something like that is worth? Is the 475 tranny a good one or what?

375? It was put into the newer chevy trucks but it was only a 3-speed? It is between a 350 and 400 and was put behind the 454's in the 454 SS trucks and some others. I was given two 292 and I can't get rid of them. Can you get some picts of the trans and motor? I am by no means an expert, but nothing GM comes to mind other than the 375?

I googled it and found out it is in the turbo hydramatic family of 350 and 400, but that's about all I can find.
No pics, just rebuild manuals.

475? That's a new one for me. GM built a 425 but that was a FWD tranny used in the Eldo's Toro's and Rivi's and it was not an overdrive.

Re: 292 and 475 auto overdrive tranny? WIW

I googled and here is what I got, 475 is a front wheel wonder, how'd he mount that to a rear wheel drive motor setup? But acording to this the 375 isn't supposed to have been behind my 454 in my 90 SS?

Hydramatics are NOT all the same.
General Motors calls most of their transmissions hydramatic. A little bit of History

Single range hydramatic produced from 1938-1951

Dual range hydramatic produced from 1952-1962
(used only in trucks after 1957)

Jetaway hydramatic produced from 1956-1964

Jetaway Roto 10 (Slim Jim) produced from 1961-1964

Jetaway Roto 05 produced from 1961-1963
used in Oldsmobile Cutlass)

Turbo Hydramatic 300 produced from 1964-1968

Turbo Hydramatic 375 produced from 1968-1975

Turbo Hydramatic 400 produced from 1964-1991

Turbo Hydramatic 425 (front wheel drive) produced from 1966-1978

Turbo Hydramatic 475 (heavy duty front wheel drive)

Turbo Hydramatic 350 produced from 1969-1985

Turbo Hydramatic 325 produced from 1979-1981

Turbo Hydramatic 325-4L produced from 1982-1985

The above transmissions were produced with the exception of the 400 prior to 1985 and since then there have been many, many more. So when you say Hydramatic it can really mean a lot of different transmissions. Hydramatic is actually the name of a division of General Motors that produces transmissions.

There is a TH-475, Its pretty much the same as a 400 but has straight cut gears instead of helical. Stronger than the 400 but more noisy, youll find these in motor homes, box vans and buses. I dont know if this is the same tranny he is talking about since these are not overdrive.

Maybe he wasn`t coherent? The 292 is in demand these days.I want one,but needs to be local.I`d say worth as much as any old running small block.

I agree!

I think that this transmission may have been offered with a converter lockup option as well, which would give the impression of a 4th "gear" but in reality is just the clunk of the converter locking up.

Later,
Buddy
