sandblasting
well, today i tried out my sandblaster. i blasted about 1/4th of a rally rim, and thought to myself "i didnt picture it comming out this rough-looking on the baremetal".
is that whats normal? also, whats the common method to preparing "viewable" parts for refinishing? i suppose i might need to sand it down quite a bit after im done stripping the rust off, but the shape of the rim is going to make that a total pain in the ass. tips, stories, etc? |

Re: sandblasting
Try blasting with walnut shells, will leave less of a profile on the steel. DuPont calls theirs Starblast, there are other brands out there that are a little cheaper. You can use a filler primer to smooth things out too.

Re: sandblasting
What type of media are you using? We use 120 glass beads and it leaves a smooth gray finish.

Re: sandblasting
My experience with walnut shells hasn’t been too good. I supposed it depends on the paint you are trying to remove.

Re: sandblasting
I don’t think it will remove rust, paint maybe. Have you considered powder coating your wheels?
I don’t think the rough finish is going to hurt your paint outcome if you use a Base Coat/ Clear Coat. s/t

Re: sandblasting
walnut shells wont do much on rust// i blast rusty rims with sand then just use 80-100grit to cleanup wipe down with thinners and epoxy primer and then the color with great results

Re: sandblasting
Sandblasting leaving a rough finish?
I would say that unless the rust has pitted the metal, it is normal and does not matter. I blasted an entire frame, cab, etc. using "play sand". You must wear a mask because regular sand contains silica dust. The roughness is actually a good thing when it comes to painting. This makes paint and/or primer adhere really well. Also, primers and paint fill in a sandblasted surface and will be mirror smooth. My 2 cents........................ |

Re: sandblasting
So what is the best sand to use, and where can you buy it?
Thanks. Scott
