64-66 panel truck

well guys im thinking about trying to make a deal for a 64-66 panel truck. i would like to get it and make a every day driver out of it. something that gets at least fair gas mileage. right now it has a 3 on the column with a 230IL6 that needs rebuilt. could i get good mileage from that? if not what could i put in it to get good mileage? i wouldent be looking for alot of power as it would just be something dependable i know i could get in and go, and know i can pass a few gas stations. any ideas?
thanks,
John

i know this sounds dumb but a big block cadillac motor could get you some really good mileage with high gearing, and some power to boot. They make so much torque that they don't have to rev much to move the weight around.

Re: 64-66 panel truck

my 91 1ton suburban with a 350 TBI/700r4 got 17 miles to the gallon with an 8650 lb curb weight. Plenty of pwer when you need it, and not too hard to convert over if you get a complete donor truck 87-91 old style. Totals are cheap in our area and make great donors. Good Luck John!!!! Jerry

Re: 64-66 panel truck

I would suggest a later model TBI motor, like a 4.3 v6 or a 350.... The older I6's aren't all that great in gas mileage.
