Broke My Truck Again -Long- (56k be carefull!)

Im pretty new here, but have found some great information over my time here. I have acquired some great ideas and motivation to finish them from the looks of the trucks I see here. I bought an 85 SWB a couple years ago. It is a nice truck, but the previous owner didn't get to do the work he wanted to for the interior. its pretty much all stock. He did do some minor body work and painted the truck himself. The paint work is a little rough, but he did admit it was his first try. Anyway, after ditching the Preditor carb he had, it ran pretty well. He put in a mini spool and 3.73s so it ran out pretty good for 4000 lbs. After awhile, the engine started to get some valvetrain noise. I narrowed it down to the intake rocker on #5. I wanted a turbo motor so the noise didn't bother me. Once I took the engine out, I found the valve had smacked the piston and tore up the lifter and lobe. I built a motor to be turbo friendly. Had the block machined, had a steel crank cleaned up, bought:
Edelbrock Victor Jr.
RHS Aluminum 200 Heads
Summit Cam 224-234 @.050 / .496/.520 w/1.6RR
JE 21cc Dish Pistons
Manley H beam rods
Put this engine together and started breaking it in. Took a little bit to get the timing and carb set, but ran pretty well after it was done. Bought my Aeromotive fuel system, 70mm turbo, and intercooler. (Haven't put the turbo setup on yet.) Took the truck out and hammered on it from a stop and snapped an axle. Chucked the wheel right out the side. Got it home, took most of the rest of the turbo money and bought some axles, c-clip eliminators, full spool, all new brakes, and shocks. Got this all set up, drove for a couple weeks and took it out again. Hammered from a stop, manually shifted the TH350 into 2nd, and heard it explode. The trans took out the drivers side exhaust, crushed the muffler pretty good, split the driveshaft, twisted the trans crossmember, sheared the converter bolts off the flexplate, broke the nose cone on the starter, and dented the floor board on the drivers side a little. Just enough damage where you get out, and almost laugh cause there ain't much else you can do! The truck is sitting now. Ive got just enough money left to get my powder coating oven built, and start making money at that. Then I will fix the truck. I've got a lot of other projects to do for the wife, and the house. The daughter, I think, was more upset than I was. She only got 1 ride in the truck and her brothers got 3! She isn't very happy right now! Here are the pictures from the beginning. Maybe I should have picked a harder road. I had asphalt stuck to the tire when I was pushing the truck off the road!

Just curious. How are you gonna run a turbo on a carburated motor. I've never seen that before. Especially a single turbo on a dual bank (V8) motor.

The road looks pretty chuncked up from shrapnel as well as covered in about 6 qts of fluid. The rearend has all Moser parts, and according to their calculator, it will handle a launch at peak power with 1200 lb. tq at that peak using slicks and no tire spin. I do want the prepped 400 and aluminum drive shaft with a loop. Im just wondering what will break next time.

Yeah you could make it happen with a lot of custom work but not very efficiently.
A supercharger (blower) would be a much better idea.

I had a Holley HP carb setup for blowthrough. There are a lot of guys making over a 1000hp on blowthroughs. Here is the carb I bought. I then stripped it down and coated it in metallic gray and fake chrome.

You would be surprised at how well a blowthrough carb will run. Turbos are naturally more efficient than a centrifugal, or roots style supercharger. The carb can be tuned to run ALMOST as well as a FI setup, it just takes different tools. On a BT carb, the boosters are bigger, the floats are different, the power valve restricter channels are enlarged, some people will boost reference the throttle shafts as well, CSU, with the help of some guys on the turbo forums have developed a boost referenced power valve. A carb will work just fine. And it cost a fraction of what a FI setup would have cost me.

although 2 of those are centrifugal Superchargers, not turbochargers.

That's pretty. Is that TBI or is that just a dry throttle body?, I see fuel rails.

I would go with Banks for a diesel, but I like Nelson for a gas engine.

You can't see it in most of the pics. but the ones w/the thermal wraps are the exhaust going down under the cab.

Don't forget a tranny blanket too ---loks like it needs it and it may be a requirement in some classes if you ever try to run it at the track.
