307 with 4 speed
When I got it the clutch was like a switch, either on or off. I guess it must have sat for a while. After about 1,000 miles it loosened up and now it works well. The rear shock mounts are all messed up - whoever put the posi axle in welded some brackets on top of the axle, so the shocks are just about bottomed out when the truck sits level. Some day I'll get around to putting the correct brackets in (under the trailing arms) with a new pair of shocks. I treated the cooling system with 'Ceramic Coat' (or something like that) which did a great job of closing up the leaky head gaskets. I went from billowing clouds of white smoke to a little blue-grey smoke, mostly on the right side. The right side plugs are pretty oily looking - I think the valve guides are loose. I'd like to tighten the motor up but that really means replacing it. Since it runs pretty well I don't have any pressing need to drop a couple of grand into it. I mounted the spare in the bed to get it out from under where access is a chore, especially with a flat rear. I made a plywood toolbox that fits perfectly, locks into the bed and comes out in about 5 minutes, solo. I also burned a hole in the new seatcover with a too-hot lamp while fixing the heater and fan controls. Doh! A new CD player provides the essential tunes ... Crazy Horse, Santana, Pink Floyd, etc. |
