what is the stock engine color for a 72

i just got a 1972 cheyene and the engine had been rebuilt about 14,000 miles ago ( 383 stroker ). i want the truck to appear as stock as possible. the p/o painted the engine black. is this stock or is chevy orange stock ? he installed a hi-volume ,hi-pressure oil pump in the engine and i am going to pull the engine to install a deep sump (7 qt ) oil pan then would be a great time to paint the engine, install the oi pan & pickup , also do the vette ram horn manifold swap, mini starter swap along with the edelbrock 2101 intake swap along with edelbrock valve covers ( old school ). please tell me its orange to be correct.
bob in tn.

Sounds like what my wife says when I throw on my work clothes... she says I have no sense of color coordination. Not sure what that means... lol

Re: what is the stock engine color for a 72

we have done some resto's on these pu's and my research has shown that on the 1971 and 72 pickups, the engine is RED.... ppg ditzler paint code is 71881, that is the factory color. the 71-72 GMC's were alpine green with ppg paint code of 44357.

i actually believe that the chevrolet orange was stopped in 1968-9 and the chevy blue was started sometime around 75, if memory serves me. most likely not.. i do have this somewhere at home on the actual dates. would have to find. but for 72 it was definately red with above paint code.

hope thats what your looking for. i really didnt care about paint on engine when i rebuilt my engines for my trucks, my 67 is chevy orange which looks super with my ceramic coated headers and i used unpolished performer rpm edelbrock carb and black crinkle chevrolet dress up kit.( i can post ya a pic if you want to see it.. ) but my motor in my 72 is BLACK...

I'm curious now also... wonder if it was a matter of which plant they came from? Or something else....

My original 71 GMC 4bolt HP motor was orange from the factory! Never saw a 350 4bolt that was not. Saw a 307 that was blue however.

If I'm in the workshop, I wear the oldest clothes I can. Except for fraying, seems to burn reeeaaalllll fast when hit with a spark, don't ask how I know. Just trust me

That's why it's a man space, we don't have to worry about color, except engine color, this thread could go on for 4-5 pages by the time all the discussions get ironed out...

eshew, obsfusication J.
