Yeah,,,need more info. A couple things come to mind anyway, scalloped/knobby tires or wheel bearings going bad, front or rear.

I would look at the tires first. They seem to be the most common thing to cause that problem. If you know someone that has a truck that has wheels that fit your truck maybe you can talk them into switching[one at a time] to help find the problem. BUT [and this is a big one] it could be most anything that rotates so you could be looking for a while. Transmission,[espesally if it is a manual]driveshaft,u-joints,carrier bearing, rearend, or wheel bearings could also be suspect. It is impossable for anyone to tell you without hearing it.

I agree with 68 Stepside, CHECK THAT CARRIER BEARING!!! I had mine replaced and the new one gave out not even 1 week with it on, but before it did i was hearing an odd (at the time) sound from under my truck. I let it go (big mistake) and ended up having it towed back to shop because the new one broke completely, not fun! Good Luck

if it does it at same rpm no matter what gear you are in then its not tires, if it only does it at certain speed the its tires or could be driveline, have to sit down and think about what things would make sounds at certain rpm or speed and such. if you think its tires then swap a couple spares on the front or rear and then go drive again at same speed when it was doing it and see if it is, if it still is then chekc out the bearing, see how much slop is in it and also in the rear U joint at the rear axle, shake the driveshaft all around, or try to and look for slop, especially if truck makes a clunk! when you put it in gear(if its auto trans)
i had a maybe similar kind of sound come from under the 79 G20 van when was cruising at around 75 or 80, like a hummmmmm......hummmmmm.....hummmmmm noise, thats when i knew i was really booking it down the freeway as the speedo was not connected up, it was either the little passenger tires not liking the rpm they were turnign or the driveline slip yoke with wear int he splines,. never did care to find out, it cruised liek a caddy so oh well. it was a neat sound actually, only someone like me would take a 79 G20 beater trashed van with door rotting off and loosing pieces of door skin and body side molding and other body panels onto freeway literally that fast and think nothing of it hell yeah zoom zoom good luck ! ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL randy@ccaonline.com 2177353230 *many GM parts bought, traded, or sold -am parting out: '81 Cutlass Supreme Brougham current fleet: -71 C-10 350/CH465/3.07- basketcase, #1 -90 Cavalier 2.2L sky blue, a driver -84 Z28 5.0L/700R4/3.73 daily driver -84 Firebird/SE 2.8L/T-5/3.73/engine bad, project #2 -82 purple Trans Am, project #3 *Paint is overrated* © RSS Enterprises 2000 [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited May 12, 2002).] |

I will check the carrier bearing. I don't think it is the tires. I bought 4 new ones 4k miles ago. Could the drift shaft be out of balance? I just does it at a certain RPM range.

Have a similar sound in mine, believe it to be the speed-O cable. Tried lithium grease. Some relief but not totally gone away.

is it comming from outside the cab, or inside, mine makes that sound too, but it is definitely the spedo cable, and it only does it in cold weather. I did have a big truck that made that sound one time, accompanied by a vibration, this was about 50 miles before the ring gear in the rear drive axle snapped in 3 pieces, i hope that is not your problem.

What happens when you speed up and/or slow down in this RPM range?
What about going around corners (1500-2000 RPM isn't all that much)? If you're sitting still, and your tranny is in N and you rev the engine do you hear the sound? Find a long hill, and start at the top. Put your truck in N and coast down. When you reach that familiar RPM range do you hear the noise? With that same hill start at the bottom, and drive up until you reach that RPM range (I assume you'll hear the sound). Does the noise sound worse than usual? Does it sound worse then when you coasted down hill? Is the sound coming out of a particular side of the truck?-front, rear, driver's side, passenger's side? Have someone ride in the back on a flat straight road with no other cars and listen... With what you're telling us it could be anything engine, trany, driveline, or differential related! Narrow it down.
