Another Denver first gen
Good morning...
Funny--I've been reading the various forums for almost two years as an unregistered guest, just getting ready for the eventual purchase. Finally made the puchase and I'm shy about jumping in...and this is no place for the faint of heart! We bought a 1972 Blazer 4x4, factory AC, usual rot, as my son's project car. He's 14 and is an absolute novice at wrenching, body work, etc. I'm not much further along, but we figured it would be a father/son project and we'd learn together. By the time he's 16 and with license, we'd have her pretty well complete and he would have a cool vehicle to tackle the snow, mountains, etc. We live near Elizabeth, CO, about 6300 feet and get more snow than Denver proper, so 4x4 was key. And, wrapping him in a bunch of steel didn't bother me in the least. Finally, if we do it right, he has a truck that'll take him anywhere for as long as he wants it and will have some value when he's done...if ever! As it is a driver with one small oil leak, our goal was to get the heater elements totally back together--the duct air slelector is busted and the hoses are pretty rough; get the top sealed well enough so momma can drive it to the grocery store in the worst snow; and get the rear floor band-aided to get the elements out. Proper body work was to begin next spring, but... Got to reading some long threads about painting, and eventually ended up on a Mopar site where a guy took a gallon of Rustoleum, cut it with thinner and worked his butt off painting, sanding, recoating a 70's Charger until it was pert near perfect. Now, time I've got and money's never around when you need it, so we started the body work/painting a bit earlier than anticipated. Pretty amazing. Oh, I neglected to mention that he was rolling it on. I'm at the 600 grit stage and I gotta tell you--good results thus far. I'll post pics on the Blazer forumn soon as I download my camera...but I'm glad to be part of this group and happy my son will be here as well... Big Red Beast ( my son named it!) |
