Titles and such
Well, with the discovery of lots of new (or previously unknown anyway) rust all throught the cab, I'm faced with having to replace it.
Now the truck was purchased two years ago and has a clean Oklahoma title (I'm in Texas). I would really like to keep my VIN and title, and keep the truck a '69. I'm guessing that I am not technically allowed to just remove the vin plate from the current cab, scrap the cab, and then rivet the vin plate into the "new" cab... I know lots of you have done this, what's the process and such? |

Re: Titles and such
This really depends on the state, when I was in kansas the title went with the frame and not the cab. However, instead of drilling out the rivet holes, just cut around the tag leaving metal around the vin tag and then just weld that one into the new cab.

Re: Titles and such
I agree. Here in MD, the law is that the VIN must match the majority of the vehicle, so it is OK to replace the cab and keep the original VIN. Best bet is to check with your local DMV for the law.

Re: Titles and such
I just bought a truck to flip for some cash, and it has a KS replacement VIN tag. It has some bullet looking rivets and only two lines of info. The title doesn't list salvage or assembly, so I am assuming that this was a cab swap. I also would cut around your existing vin plate if you want to keep it. Before you do anything, stop by your local sheriff or State patrol office and find out what the rules are in your state. No sense blemishing the title or getting fined for something like fixing rust.

Haha, you guys crack me up. Thanks all. I'm going to look at a new cab tomorrow. Just have to find someplace to stash it until I get some of this junk out of my garage!

Re: Titles and such
Whatever you do I wouldn't drill out the rivets, they are expensive to replace and some DMV officers especially in Cali are super tough and can spot non standard rosebud rivets. Then there are all types of headaches

Re: Titles and such
Grind the rivets off from the backside of the cab panel. the rozebud will stay with the plate. Prep the area it will be placed on with a grinder. Mix up some 2- part epoxy & stick it on.
Total cost, a few bucks for epoxy. & the world will never know
