1970 engine options
Hello all,
I am new to the site, and have just brought home my new project: 1970 c 20 2wd longbed. I have been trying to figure out what the original engine in my truck was and if it is still in it. I cannot find any info on engine options anywhere for 67-72 pickups, (although I have not looked very hard in all honesty). The glove box states it should have had a 400 cid v-8 in it, rpo code L47. The truck has a big block in it now. I am not sure yet what engine is in it, I have not had a chance to run the block #'s. It also has the original 400 turbo trans in it. Does anyone know what the L47 400 cid engine is? I have seen some of these trucks with a 402 in them and was wandering if that is what the L47 is. Thanks alot. |

Re: 1970 engine options
Welcome to the board. The engine option L47 was 396 in 1967 and 1968 but later changed to the 402 (but called 400). Not sure if the change was made in '69 or '70. Someone else on here will know. The fenders badges, when used said 400 as did the later SPIDs. My '68 SPID says 396.
396 4.094" 4.154" 3.760" 402 4.125" 4.185" 3.760" You can get a free "Restoration Package" from GM by calling a toll free 800 number that is listed in the FAQ section of this board. We would all love to see pics of your new ride...faded paint, rusty rockers, cab corners and all!

Re: 1970 engine options
Thanks for the info, I know the 402's were just factory overbore's, I can find that out later when I get the engine #'s. I got an awesome deal on this pickup and could not pass it up. I convinced my wife we need to get rid of the 1997 k3500 crew cab longbed single wheel that I have and get something smaller since we now live in reno. I will post pictures later when I take some. Anyone need a 1997 one ton?

Welcome
Oh yeah, sounds like your motor the Big Block is probably original to the truck. there would be casting numbers on the front of the block above the waterpump.

Re: 1970 engine options
1070 was kind of a sketchy year for the 396/402. GM was reluctant to call the 402 a 402 because it didn't want to lose the already great reputation that the 396 had in the 396SS cars and such. For instance, My 70 has 396 badges and says 396 c.i. in the glovebox but under the hood on the radiator support is an emmissions control info sticker that reads 402 c.ci 350 hp
