Please Help me with a 71 to 69 change over - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi Everyone, I have a couple of questions about my 69 C10 it's a longbed 3 on the tree 6 cyl. Last year I bought a 71 shortbed for parts, It had a very rusted out bondo filled body but it had a rebuilt factory disk brake frontend Somebody had heated and dropped the springs, So I pulled the whole frontend out cross member and all, And put it in my 69, I put the 69,s springs in the 71 frontend and it's about a 1 1/2 lower then it was with the original frontend can anybody tell me why? also I have the rearend from the 71 and it's a 3:08 and the 69 is a 3:73 and need it for pulling.. Can I just change the axels and brake drums to make it 5 lug all away around? Both trucks have coil spring rearends Thanks for any help. George

Are you using different tires then you had on the truck before?

Also, is it possible that in addition to the lowered springs the previous owner installed dropped spindles on the 71?

As far as the rear axles, they will be a different length. I think people have made it work, but I don't know how? Maybe use the tubes and axles from the 71 and swap the pumpkin from the 69? Again, I really don't know, just guessin.

Could also be the simple factor is that the 69 springs are shot and weak.

As far as the rear axles go, Redneck had that covered. The 69 axles are each about 3/4" shorted than the 71 axles (toal of 1.5" in overall axle width). So if that is the origainl 69 axle, no it is nt a direct bolt in change. I personnally do not know the specifics on how to do it, but you could change the ring and pinion carrier from the 69 and put it in the 71 axle.

The truck has the same tires that it had, and it only took two days to do the job and it dropped at least 1 1/2 inches. I thought about the dropped spindles too so I checked them against my low miles 71 and they are the same...I'm not sure if the lower contol arms are different or not..maybe deeper? My scrap man hauled the part's off and I didn't think at the time to check that...They looked the same but I did not measure them. Thanks Guys, George
