Temp gauge questions

I can't get my temp gauge to work. Is there some way to test the gauge? I've seen in the catalogs that there is an temp gauge resistor. I'm assuming that is mounted to the rear of the gauge. I've used two different sending units. Is it ok to use thread tape on the units, or does it need to be pipe dope. And, is the temp gauge wire to the sending unit green? I can't remember if the gauge worked with the old motor because I only started it a couple of times.

Yes temp ga. wire is green. To check the guage you can turn ign. on and ground sensor wire, if the guage is working it will peg to the hot side. Also make sure your wire has continuity to ga.
