long stepper....

Alright this has been bugging me for a while, I have a 68 K20, long step. I have been on here a while and have not seen a lot of long steppers, let alone any 4wd's. Who else is running one of these? Rare? Time for all you 67-72 guru's to chime in....

Alot of the long steppers were on the 3/4 ton 4wds and I've seen them mostly on GMC's but they are on Chevys.My 69 4wd was a long step originally,it was rusted to nothing and replaced with a more traditional long fleet since I cant do much work with a stepside and having a lwb 4wd is mostly about using it as a truck for hauling stuff.I've got production numbers on them,I'll post them shortly.There is a few members with the 8' foot stepbeds on here.One nice one is a red K2500.

yeah, the one I have is pretty rusty, not too far gone but getting there, it sat in the corner of a field for quite a few years, Not a lot of options...still has the orig 327... needs top end rebuild. Was going to put the motor in my 69, but am having trouble stripping this one for parts for the simple fact of not seeing many of these around. Here's a couple of pics...

my '69 K20 was originally a long step, but as others have said, the bed was basically gone. no fenders, just the side walls. so, it got pulled off, and had a long fleet sat on it.

personally, i have a soft spot for them, just because they're odd.

Production numbers for long stepside trucks.These are for 4wds but can post the 2wd production numbers if wanted.***These are for Chevys,GMC production numbers aren't available.

Uhhh...more traditional Fleetside?They never existed before 1958.Traditionally a Stepside is what came on a truck.Especially when they were all there was.Maybe you meant to say "typically".As far as Stepsides not for work?I gotta laugh,,,sorry.Tell that to the workforce that built the infrastructure upon which we all stand upon.A Stepside is the more "utility" design and is better to work from than a Fleetside.The Fleetside is a matter of style.With a Stepside you can access the bed easier and your load stays in place better with the solid straight sides.Unless you haul bulk materials like mulch or stone the Stepside hauls just as much as a Fleetside,unless you`re packing little things around the wheelhouses.But,a dump body is best for that.A pair of tool/storage boxes(utility sides)could be installed in place of the fenders for a serious work truck that could haul what a Fleetside could and store more items in organized bins.

My truck has a good box (minus fenders) and a decent GMC tailgate that I would get rid of if anyway needs one.

Nope,I mean traditional because in the 67-72 era there was a whole lot more fleetside trucks than stepsides.And for my use..lumber,loads of gravel,I've hauled dirt,and my 4 wheelers,I've done stuff the stepside couldnt handle.My 4 wheelers couldn't even fit in a stepside,I've got to drive over the wheel-wells just to get it in the fleetside...But if I wanted a truck for construction,I'd go down the road and get the '69 C/20 350/3spd that has a reading utility bed on it..I think it would look good on a long wheel base 4wd frame,and maybe one ton axles...But I'd love to have a 67-72 body on a newer K/30 chassis though with a dump bed.

I agree with special K , the stepside was traditionally the more functional and easier to work with vehicle in special trades.The 1 ton 9' stepside was built long before the first 1 ton fleetside.Stepside were much easier to load and unload from the sides.Truck builders removed the rear fenders and installed lockable compartments which utilized valueable space and created a very handy service vehicle like in the 1967 GMC 3/4 ton below.
