Wing vent Q

So haulin here from WA, I went to open the drivers side wing vent as soon as I got out of the rain. (mid OR or so) I hit the lever, lightly pushed it, and it didn't budge.
OK, I'm kinda used to that, the longhorn is the same way.
So I hit it, it flung open, and the GLASS FELL OUT!!!!

I have no clue HOW I caught it, but I did. I felt REAL cool for catching it not knoing it would do that.

So, my question, how do I reatach it? The frame stayed there, the glass fell out of the chrome triangle frame. Do I glue it in there with epoxy or maybe silicone it?
I don't think I've ever seen this problem mentioned here.

Re: Wing vent Q

It was originally held in place with some stuff called "glass setting tape" ... the best way I know how to describe it is rubberized double sided tape.

Re: Wing vent Q

Nice catch.

Glazing tape sun-dried-out & shrunk. Doesn't take much.

To really fix it, it vent frame should be removed, the glass retaped with new rubber glazing tape (get it at the glass company), and the glass driven (pounded with a rubber mallet) back into the vent frame, and the excess rubber trimmed off.

If it were me, I'd probably clean both the glass edge & the rubber channel really good with alcohol, silicone the snot out of it, and pull it back with a couple of carpenter's furniture clamps back into where it came from. Let the silicone that oozed-out dry, and then trim the excess off. Nice "temporary fix," probably good for a few years until a major rebuild......

Much easier than taking the window & vent frame out of the door.

Re: Wing vent Q

Several years ago my driver's side vent suddenly loosened and nearly fell out. While 68shortstep's fix sounds like the right way to go, I just cleaned mine up, applied clear silicone seal, and put it back together. It's been holding for -- hmmm, I dunno how long, but well over ten years...
