I would say that they are WARN standard hubs and your "WARN" label has fallen off.

Always...
Just been doing alot of sheet metal work on the underside of the cab. There was more rust/rot/bondo than it first appeared. Hopefully I'll get some pics up tonight.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

Been too long once again with the updates. The last month or so has been lots of rust repair and welding new sheet metal to the cab floors and installing new cab mounts. This truck was hiding alot of bondo! Hate it when you start grinding what you thought was metal, only to find a nice white cloud of dust as you grind nothing but half an inch of bondo.

I'm replacing rusted areas with 16 guage metal which I find easier to weld and is readily available at Lowes. I have two new cab corners from Tabco on the way. I posted a poll in the paint section and I think I'm going to paint the underside with two good coats of Southern Polyurethanes epoxy primer, and then put a generous coat of Herculiner over that. I like that Herculiner is soft and pliable for chip/road debris resistance as well as additional sound dampening. Any thoughts? I want this to hold up!

Took everything out of the cab too, including all pedal brackets and wiring. This I will prep too and primer and topcoat orange again. I am leaning towards the same factory paint scheme. Thoughts?

Mechanically, the drivetrain is all in and I'm working to get the cab back on the truck after it has been primered.

I do have an interesting problem that maybe you can all help me out with. before I took this thing apart, it had a pretty level stance from front to rear. I replaced all leave springs with stock replacements. I added ORD's shackles up front (supposed to give a half inch lift). Also added ORD's rear shackles, but I do not have a shackle flip, so this effectively lowered the rear 1 inch. To compensate I added their 1" add a leaf blocks. So here's the problem. The truck is now raked about 7" from back to front. Any thoughts?
Now I just need to get a garage heater so I can work through the winter.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

Looks like my cab too..all new panels going in..I used tabco panels, they are my favorite. Are you using the buckets in it that you pulled from that rusty GMC? If so are you going to use a crossmember that goes under the cab like the trucks did that originally had bucket seats or just not going to use it?
As for the stance,it should go down with the weight on it (The body). If not you might have an excuse to get a set of lift springs for the front (4" maybe?)

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

I never knew there was a crossmember that went under the cab of trucks with buckets. If I had known that I may have tried to take the one off the GMC, but I am betting there is nothing left of it anyway. That truck was pretty toast. I'm now sitting on two pairs of original buckets, one from the GMC and one from my 71 K5. I doubt I will use either of them. I think I like a bench with some sort of center console flip down thing. I should put them up for sale.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

Yeah, there is a crossmeber that runs under the cab where the front of the seats mount..I believe you could do w/out it,or sometimes they show up on the parts board for $75-$100 or so.If you look under your blazer,it will have the crossmember also so you can see what it looks like.Just thinking about the GMC tells me that crossmember was probably all gone.. I like the bench seat with the 4spd..like the buckets with the automatics.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

Few things have been done since I last posted.
The cab undercarriage work is just about done, just need to grind all the welds and make them look good. I got the Tabco cab corners on and they are VERY good quality. The fit was outstanding, and the thickness is better than any others I've seen.

The cab is stripped of everything and going in to get sandblasted at a buddies place tomorrow. Here are the pics as it sits now.

The plan is when it gets back to do the final welding work, then spray the whole thing with two coats of either Southern Polyurethanes epoxy primer or Rust Bullet, then use some 3m Automix seam sealer to get all the nooks and crannies smoothed out. One or two more coats of epoxy, and then the undercoating.

I think I have settled on using the Durabak undercoating/bedliner. I've done alot of research and narrowed it down to Herculiner and the Durabak. The deciding factor was the hardness. I've heard the Herculiner is really hard and stiff and I want something with a little give underneath to absorb the shock of gravel and road debris getting kicked up.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

I got stuck in the winter doldrums and not much has happened, but now I feel re-energized and ready to go.

Got the cab back from the sandblaster and now I have lots of metal work to do. There's some rot through in some strange places that I will post more pics of, but the past few weeks have been welding, grinding, welding, grinding...

I made a large order for some Southern Polyurethanes epoxy primer, turbo 2k high build, and their waterborne cleaner.

Also got 3m 8307 Seam Sealer with applicator gun, and some rage extreme and rage gold. Can't wait to get the body ready for the first coat of epoxy!

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

They quoted me $550 over the phone, but when I brought it in they only charge $350 because it was in really good shape and I had completely stripped it of everything, and I mean everything

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

No, that was just to blast. They did a great job though, using garnet media. I guess they always quote high over the phone because they can't tell the condition until they see it in person. It was a major time saver. It would have taken me months o get it to the same condition they got it to in one day. Well worth the money if you can swing it...

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name

Slow and steady, but getting close to some good visual progress. I've been welding patch panels and replacing metal for months now. I want this cab as solid as possible.

One more day of welding, then another of grinding, and I should be ready to lay down some epoxy primer and start filling.

I've just about decided to go with a 67-68 GMC front clip and paint it black or really dark metallic gray. What do you guys think?

Very nice!

Personally, I would go with metallic gray.
