What will it take
As soon as my 68 is done, shooting for Jan Feb 08,I want to try a little something different for me any way.
I have 1990 Chevy Astro van with a 4.3 and and a 700r that I have owned since new. Was going to sell it but found the resale on these things are extremely low. So here is my thought. I could pull the engine and seats and steering A/C lots of parts and put into a truck. Maybe a 47-54 I know there is another board for these years, but there are more guys here and I do have a 68 Anyway what will it take to transplant the engine? Drive shaft is open older trucks are closed right? What about the TBI injection Is there a different type of fuel delivery as in pressure? Any ideas? "Hewy"

All it would take is money and a lot of time fabing. I put TPI in my 71 and I did it all myself. No kit's back when I done it in 89. Anything can be done it's how much are you willing to put into it that matter's.

for one you will need an electric fuel pump, 9 to 13 PSI. this woule be best done with a rear tank swap from someone like Fuelcellguy.
I would rob all the engine wiring from the van along with the ECM. the engine is a bolt in. that's the only easy part. |

There should be someone out with a carbed manifold for the 4.3.That would save some work as long as the engine has the old style distributor and not a reluctor wheel and coil pack set-up.You can use a toggle switch for the lock up function on the 700R4.You may want to look at the weight of the truck you want to put it into.A 49-55 first series may be a good choice.Check the frame(if it's not a unibody).There are a lot of 49-55 conversions using the S-10 frame.That may be a workable solution.

If the weight is close the performance and handling should be the same.If it were a vehicle with a frame it might be possible to swap a body on easier than swapping everything over to whatever you were building.If you use the 4.3 in a 1 ton dump you would probably hate the way it performed.If you used it in a Opel GT it would probably run like a scalded dog.

Since you have a donor car, the only wires on the TBI you need to change are:
constant power switched power ground(maybe) and start signal. You may cut some out that go to the instrument cluster. It took me longer, but I have seen people do it(TBI engine swap) in one day. I would keep it for mileage and driveability.
