what do we all know about the Hilborn injection system? pros/cons and would it be worth puting on a completely stock 454? what else would i need to complete this setup?

i love the looks of those type injector setups. not many of those on the street. i remember seeing those in an old hot rod magazine years ago, that a guy was running on a small block, and he had the float bowl for a holly carb mounted on the front of it to do something. not sure what though. anyways it looked to be to much of an unknown for me to tackle so i shelved the idea.
But you may be more knowledeable than i was back then. good luck, i would like to know how this works out, if you get it and make it work. i would love to have one of these puppies myself. Good luck!

You dont want that on the street. It uses a somewhat complicated cam driven pump & they are pretty temprimental . It is super sweet though.

on another note, does one have to get a special carb for a BB? or will standard Qjet or Holley or Edelbrock fit?

Well, yeah, MOST any quadrajet or holly will bolt up to it depending on what carburator flange is on your intake. But finding one that works well for your combination, is a little more involved than that.

Yeah, I would pass on that for a daily driver. You can cobble something together using all late model GM stuff for not a whole lot of money and a nice dependable system. Check out my concoction of GM EFI goodies for my current project http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=263323

If it is a completely stock truck big block - that might not be a great fit -- but if you wanted to pull it and "freshen it up" with say, an old ZL-1 cam grind and some aftermarket alloy heads and 10:1 pistons--- it would be the cat's ass for a weekend toy. (lets face it -- gas prices are gonna relegate most of our trucks to weekend status if this price spike increases too much more)

It might have the effect of putting a 1050 Dominator on a stock 454 if you just threw it on there cold, though (that is, with no other mods)

I would personally bid on that myself if it wasnt alredy at $400 w/ 3 days to go --- too close to Christmas for me.

If you have the dough -- that would be a nice unit to keep on the workbench until you get around to it though. That would give you major points in the bench racing wars !

Edelbrock 1406, electric choke, if you have an aftermarket manifold. Edelbrock Q-jet replacement if you have a stock manifold

The mechanical fuel injection unit are sweet for drag racing but not very good for the street as they can only be tuned for wide open throttle.

Those do look kool but the mechanical ones are a pian in the azz to get set-up from what I have been told..

My buddy who has too much money & is into aluminum KB Hemi's on the street (ya, he's insane...) was telling me that guys are taking the Hilborn setup & putting a tps sensor on them (turning the stacks into throttle bodies), drilling the manifold for injectors below the stacks & thereby making it an EFI setup. A cool idea, an amazing look with all the awesome driveability of EFI. It would be a _TON_ of work & money, but very hot looking setup... Put the right stacks on there & it will look like a McLaren CanAm motor.

I agree that mechanical ones would be a PITA, and are better suited for circle track etc. The Quad Weber setup looks okay but would be more costly.

What I did see one time is a set of these Hilborns retrofitted with large modern injectors and an ECM w/O2 sensor. The guy had the best of all 3 worlds: Driveability; performance; and OMG!!! looks.

A big bucket of money will help the projet as the real thing is big time $$$. I've attached a few wild pics of some engines. These units just slip over your ezisting 4 bbl. carb. There not the real thang but then again the price tag isn't the real thang either.
