Welding the 'gate shut....

Im thinking about welding my 'gate closed, shaving the handle, and just generally cleaning things up back there. Since I dont use it as a truck anyway I figured Id at least try to make it pretty.

Anyone here got pics of that?

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

I saw three trucks at shows over the summer with tail gates welded shut, they were all cracked at the welds. I guess the bed twists causing the cracks.

I wish I had taken pictures, sorry!

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

Heres mine , i did it right before i decided to do a frame off... it wasnt that hard to do, really...i just took a stock gate and used to lower cups, and tacked it at the top. then i took 22 guage sheet metal and filled both sides. filled the tail lights in with the same sheet metal, and back up lights as well... as far as the inside i stiched a bead around all three sides..and made rwo gusets for the top corners. As far as the roll pan is concerned , there was a little extra metal on it , as far as if the gate would open.. it was like a filler panel.. so i trimmed it flush with the gate..then used that metal and also stiched it to the gate..solid...i have about 80 hours in the whole bed... thats alot..but the left side , had a tree fall on it and i had to cut 1/2 of the bedside of and heat and dolly it back out, reshape and reweld it back to the bed....< i baught the bed sight unseen so, i didnt know that was there...but it was a rust free bed... and paid 1.500 for it.so i just made it work for. me.... hope this helps...if you have any questions just ask me ...tonyName: shaved bed 2.JPG

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

i've been thinking about doing the same to mine as well. but i was thinking about getting a full skin for it instead of welding the gate shut. What are your thoughts on that?

i looked around for skins, and they fetch a pretty penny, so now i'm leaning toward just welding it shut, just like how bad6772 described, and also doing the roll pan. i like the look of "CHEVROLET" across the back as well, so that's another plus for just welding it shut.

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

Yeah Bad6772. That is exactly what I wanna do to mine, 'cept I wanna keep my taillights in the stock location.

That the stock 'gate? I noticed it dont have "CHEVROLET" written across it like mine does. Which I wanna get rid of.

Thanks, I like it.

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

it was a stock gate with the chevrolet script.. i basically just de skinned the gate.... i buddy of mine is building a 68 so he wanted the script. thats why i did it this way.i just used 16 gueage sheetmetal and plug welded it back together... the whole process is really easy imo . just dont over think it... i did that and it took me about 4 mos to make the first cut or weld...then i just decided to do it and it went pretty easy from that point......hope this may help you guys......tony

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

I like the hidden handles but I don't like having to skin the tailgate to do it. If you want to weld yours shut, more power to you. It's your truck....build it like you want. You won't get any dissing from me.

don't take it personally bro, i sure didn't mean it that way. look at it this way, everyone has things they like and everyone has things they dislike ... doesn't mean one is better than the other. just means we're all different.

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

Considering stuffing oversized rims under bagged/lowered trucks is part of mini-truck culture anyway..Which I must say a good majority of people do accomplish on this thread..So I guess that makes 1/2 this board mini-truckers..About the tail-gate situation though, I went with a full-skin on my S-10 with 06' Colorado frenched in..It turned out really well, Just make sure its properly braced, then it wont flex and break welds or whatever..Dont worry about what people are gonna think about it, Its a clean look thats why its so popular..The "classic restored" truck enthusits just dont like it because they say it "Dosnt make it a truck anymore because you cant put the tailgate down" when they know damn good and well they dont either, muchless haul anything but a big ego in the back of it..So stick with simplicity....Smooth=Clean=A good look...IMO

Re: Welding the 'gate shut....

Its all good brother, I love opinions and I like giving them as well...If you think thats bad, Id hate to see your response if I posted a pic. of a guy running a full skin W/Supra taillights on a box body S-10..The Colorados appealed to me, hell, I love em..But not enough to go buy the whole truck..But watch out fellas, Cause its the first Colorado tail-light conversion on a Stepside S-10..Might have somethin special...Maybe?
