The dreaded radio question

Ok I know that this should be in the Audio section but I don't think that I will get my answers there. That is mostly '73 and up that I saw in there. My dash is cut so that can leave all the don't hack comments out

Here is what I'm wanting. I want something that I can watch DVDs on and get navigation. would prefer touch screen but might settle for another design if someone has a better way to set it up. I want to get pics of what others have done with this set up or have seen. I would prefer a flip screen but I'm not sure if it will clear the dash pad. also if it looks ok might look into a double din. Please help

I can get you a phat deal on a strata panasonic double din if you decide to go that way! If you want to do a flip out you may have to move your a/c controls up to the radio hole and put the flipout in the a/c slot!

I`m using the kenwood excelon system in my car its a single din with a 7 inch touch screen that you can hook nav up too. but its pricey. looks and sounds great though. the previos comment is probably right though. the screen might hit the dash pad. although the kenwood has two settings for how far the screen pops out. so before you go buy a screen set up, measure how far the dash pad sets away from the cut out in your dash for clearance

id take an mp3 player over that any day. I kept the cassette stereo in my 70 gmc and bought a cassette adaptor and a 29.99 mp3 player and it does real good for what I put in it not quite 40 bucks all in all it was well worth it and did not have to cut and chop the dash. Because most cd players in order to clean it you have to use canned air and if you hit a bump in the road it will skip. When its hot outside you would not want to leave it in the player cause it will warp a little bit and then your out of a 20 dollar cd and 100+ dollar cd player cause when its 80 + degrees outside your vehicle it would be in the 100 to 120 degrees in your car. my mother had a 91 or 92 ford taurus and it was roomy and it had a nice little cd player in it if ya hit a bump it would skip and the cd player was 250 dollars. that was the third and all we used was the fm radio. the first and second went out cause the cd warped a little bit over the summer while the car was off and it will do it cause the day it happened it was in the upper 90s and some of my cds done that while they were under the seat. I was mad real mad cause in 96 and 97 it happened and I was only 7 or 8.

that will get the job done for cheap tunes , but he was wanting to watch dvd's and have nav capability too. (The touch screen Kenwood double din is awesome for all that )

I dont know what the heck kind of cd players you have been using, but i usually buy Alpine or Kenwood products and have never had the problem with skipping like you said -- even with some of their cheaper decks ($200 or so)

have you looked at he eclipse avn 7000? thats pretty much everything you're asking for.

I think for a double din HU, you'd need to make a center console? Has anyone done a double din set up?

I have a cheap one from Wally World in it now that takes SD cards and it works fine. most of the ons I have seen will take SD cards for video and music. I looked at the Kenwood 617 today at best buy and the screen looks like it will clear the dash when it opens and it will adjust on how far it stays out when it pulls back after the screen is up. the tray comes out and flips up from the back. I might make something to take up there to mock up the dash pad on their display to get a better idea.

Most people will say watching a DVD while driving is dangerous and stupid.
I know, you are only going to watch it while parked, or at the car show.
Kenwood has some awesome stuff, great signal to noise ratio, above average THD and the whole gambit of features. But I have never seen one work properly, even on display in high end stores.

I was looking at my dash and to do the double din setup you would have to remove the ashtray to keep the center vent above the radio.

I want that for when I'm on lunch at work, camping and also when I go to meets. I want nav. so I can go to new places without having to print out alot of maps

Portable DVD with RF interface is what I use, and
Verizon wireless EnV with navigation for the times I’m lost.
But seriously, I haven’t seen a Kenwood that didn’t have problems when I was looking for a high end stereo. But, I guess that was twenty something years ago too….

I am trying to find out something to do with my truck so I made it a point to point out that my dash is cut to leave those comments out. They get into a big debate and end up leaving these types of posts with few answers. I am the one who chose to cut it when I got the truck.

For every ones information I'm going to cut it even more when I get the a/c to install the vents

And -- just to clarify -- that already has the nav software installed? Thats a good deal if so

The double Din touchscreen Kenwood is cool, but its like 900 for the basic unit, then another few hundred for nav, then another few hundred to install a tv tuner -- when its done - its , like 1700

it does have the navigation software built in and its hard drive based so you don't have to put a Dvd in to get directions like some of the lesser expensive units. I installed a similar pioneer unit and my cost was over 1700!

Well I decided to go with the Kenwood KVT-719DVD becouse they are the only ones who have 2 adjustments for the screen. (tilt and back). Does anyone have this one or an older one in there truck? The screen comes out then the top tilts up from the back.
