th400 kickdown detent switch

What is the proper operation of the th400 kickdown detent switch mounted on the gas pedal ('72)? Mine does not move freely. I assume the gas pedal rod is supposed to push the switch to kickdown the tranny at high throttle? I can manually move the switch, but it will stick in that position.

If that's not correct, is it possible to clean it up?

thx, eric

Re: th400 kickdown detent switch

The switch should slid freely. There is a spring in it to push it back. Never tried cleaning but some crc 226 or electric contact cleaner should clean the switch.

it is avalible at the parts store, and I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer still had it too. They used it into the 90's on TH400 equipped P/30 trucks.

Re: th400 kickdown detent switch

Thanks for the replies. I'll see about replacing it.

I finally got around to replacing the throttle cable on my truck, and it's too long by about 1.5".
