How far away are you?
I realized the other day that I'm now probably closer to 'done' on my truck than I am to 'start'...kinda scary, but more cool
Of course...that still leaves a list of stuff to do...namely: *Coated headers and at least a partial, if not a full exhaust replacement...could be $800 *New carpet... $95 locally if I go with original-style stuff, might redo it with cut-to-fit type stuff... *Cover the dash pad with cloth and maybe door panels as well *Bottom end for the engine, along with a new cam...I want to do a 383...we'll have to see what the budget allows this summer...but probably about $2000 into that...unless the budget calls for making the engine last another year, then it'll just be a pan gasket *Fuel injection, most likely TBI since that appears to be a rather cheap and easy swap with nice benefits...probably $500 to $800 since I'll pull most/all? of it from a junkyard. *Fix the rear brakes for good...discs are soooo tempting just so I never deal with drums again... *Wes' dual electric fan setup, $300 *LED front signals, when they come out and when I can afford them And that's really about it...of course, that totals up to as much as $4000 to go! I've probably got close to, if not more than twice that in there so far...

I've put about 6 grand worth of "necessary" work into the truck. That is, stuff to make it mechanically and structurally sound, safer to drive and more comfortable. Don't need any of the fancy stuff that lots of other board members are doing, however, after paint, I will be replacing the 3/4" plywood deck w/ a regular plank deck. Might also consider blazer tank prior to that, makes sense to do it when you have the wood off.
Eventually I'll be looking into rebuilding the motor, something I haven't considered yet. But for now, still runs good, decent compression and my opinion is...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Well I've decided to cut back on my truck from my original plan to move onto my next project...1st gen camaro or late 3rd gen corvette.
Wheels & tires $1300 A/C $1000 Bed floor $300 Tonueu cover $200 or so Weather seal and felt $100 electric fan from salvage yard $100 (including reley) That's about 3 grand. I'm sure there's a few more things that I can't think of. |

By the way, was showing my girlfriend some of your site and she sends her regards about that one. How much of it are you still using? I define done, at least in my case, as not having any more major plans aside from maintaining it and driving it for a few years, at least. You know, until you get an itch for an even bigger engine or even better paint

about 10 grand away from finished, mabe two years or so. need to get bed done, frame powder coated, running gear put back togeather, then it is all about the paint and interior repacement.

I've bought everything to complete it. Now I just need the time, and that is harder to come by thean money sometimes. LOL
I have a list of never ending projects from the house, to my daily driver, wifes car, customers rides, ect. I feel sometimes I WILL NEVER GET DONE!!!

Hope to have it completed by Spring have tons of time right know because I do Roofing in the summer .Right now I am Plowing when it snows and trying to work on my cab when I get caught up on my sleep. Cab in primer by end of month put cab on frame and bolt clip; on by the end of the month and if it keeps snowing I will have enough Cash to build my motor up not much in the way of cash left to spend just tons of hours. Oh and when I find a seat from a 96 with power and lumber adj that could take YEARS!!!!

Define "done." It's runnin' sweet and stops fine, that's done.
Let's see, what's next... (not in any particular order) heater core/AC, relo gas tank, repl seat, dash pad, window regulators, weatherstripping, new gauges, fix rusted-out holes in bed or replace, some rust in the rockers and door corners (the usual places), making the body rattles go away, poly body mounts, a new paint job inside and out would be nice, bedliner, new windshield and rear slider incl seals, new shocks (10 of them, thank you), new steering stabilizers, new tires (on my birthday wish list), new stereo. I think that about does it, 'cept fixin' what I break. Then I can get to some real upgrades, like a concealed winch up front, dual battery, on-board air compressor and tank, maybe even a welder. Got too many things on my Honey-do list. Heck, I haven't even installed the fog/driving lights I got for Christmas. Have to finish the living room remodel first. Must keep the peace, if you know what I mean. All things at their appropriate time, I guess.

Like Cobalt, you can park convoys of semi's between mine and the end. I'm really still coming apart. I guess i can look at an end when I catually start putting things back on instead of taking thjem off.

The engine and tranny get me to work every day in the GMC...the int is in there too, many odds and ends in either the GMC, the Longhorn, or the basement, and the cab is at Fine69's place.
The rolling chassis and bed are in a junk yard in Temple Tx. |

Cool. Always good to hear that not all of a wrecked truck is getting tossed...one of my friends is doing that with his mutt-truck that got totaled (with him under the hood at the time!). The shame is, that 'mutt' (multiple years, heh) had the straightest body I've ever seen on a '67-'72.

Unless you put it in a bubble, a truck is never done. You just get further time between jobs. I for example, just crumpled a front fender on my longhorn, after finnally getting the high dollar paint job. So, its back to it. Or, I could, and probably will, just leave it that way, and drive it not worrying about scratching the now messed up but previously flawless body.
On other projects, I have decided to forgo a restoration, and just keep it on the road. The rust hole in the floor will not get cut out and a new one welded in, it will get wire brushed and fiberglassed. I have a lot more fun in a truck my concience can relax in. My only precondition is that it has to pass inspection, and be one color on the outside. Of course be drivable. I dont think I will ever restore another truck or car again. I will just buy a decent one in the first place and drive it as is.
