2pc. Driveshafts???

Where`s the rhyme or reason with these.Honestly,I thought all 4wds had one piece and this was a 2wd thing. The t-case shortens the length already and everything I`ve ever had was 1pc.But,I`ve recently seen some 2pc deals on both longbeds and Suburbans.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

My guess, is that it helps keep the driveline up between the frame rails for as long as possible to prevent damage to it. but I'm guessing. Granted my truck is a frankenstein when I bought it, and has just gotten worse, but mine came with a 2 piece rear.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

I`ve had mostly K/20s,SWB K/10s,and K/5s.They`ve all been 1pc.I`ve had two LWB K/10s,a`69 with 3spd and a`72 with TH350 and they had 1pc.I just don`t understand what determines when a 2pc gets installed.I only recently came to realize ant 4wds had 2pc.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

My 69 K20 has a two piece driveshaft. It was originally a 3 on the tree/Rockwell. It is now an SM465/Rockwell. I've replaced the carrier bearing once.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

My 69 (Back when it was a K10 and didn't have 3/4 ton running gear) had a 2 piece setup..I've seen some older ones (67-68s) that had a one piece and then all the ones with the NP205 have had the one piece that I've seen...I don't know why some did and some didn't..

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

My 68 came with a Rockwell and 2piece, but I made it one piece when I swapped in the SM465.

If so, I will have to make up one of those windshield decal things for my 69:

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

Just occured to me that the g/f's 68C10 long bed w/ 3 on the tree has a 2-piece d/s. (Just to help confuse). And it's supposed to be a stock truck.

If I may add to the confusion, My 68K20 has a Rockwell and a 2 piece Drive shaft, while my 69K20 has a Rockwell and a 1 piece driveshaft. They are both longbeds, the 68 is a V8 while the 69 is a 6cyl, not sure if this matters or not.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

Bought my first truck new in 1969, K20, 350, 4speed, rockwell. It had a two piece drive shaft. Bought another 1969 used in 1970 to expand my snowplowing work, same drive train and it also was a two piece drive shaft.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

I looked in the LMC catalog and the only carrier bearings they listed were 2wd.It ain`t that bible, that`s for sure.
I just thought this would be an interesting topic. We may never find an absolute answer, but curious minds will inquire, right?I think GM weened off of the 2pc as they transitioned into the New Process case.In`69,only Blazers had automatic trans, right? And they had the 205.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

It has to be a rockwell thing but did the shortbeds have the 2 piece shaft too?I believe Jakes68GMC said his '68 K2500 had a one piece though. If that's the case then that just screws things up more.Tim,I've got a spid label here from an original 69 K20 and it had a turbo 350 tranny.I do not know about the rear driveshaft though. The t-case would have had to be a NP205.I need to ask some people with the shortbeds with the Rockwells if there driveshaft is 2 piece or not..We'll get this figured out!

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

I know of a truck with a NP205 and a 2pc.Has anyone seen a`73-up with a 2pc?I have,but I don`t know what`s what on this truck.It`s a`68 2wd body on a`73-up frame,has front springs the same length as 69-72s,2pc driveshaft/NP205/4spd,and 8-lug axles w/large hubs(blue knobs).
Were 73-75 or so leafs the same as 69-72s?I know they got longer at some point.

Re: 2pc. Driveshafts???

I looked at what was supposed to be a 69 (I think it was a 70) 3/4T 4X4 long bed with the 205 X-fer, and it was 1-piece DS, and it was freaking huge, compared to mine...
