Power Windows
I am new here and I am sure this has been talked about before but I cannot find any threads. I have been considering power windows. When I look through catalogs the price range is so varied and I am not sure if I comparing apples and oranges. There the types with cables that I believe have a screwdrive. Then I found these at CPP http://www.classicperform.com/Store/Power_Windows.htm and they look more like what I would expect, the scissor type mechanism. When I look in the brothers catalog under one piece glass you can purchase the kits for about 350 but it doubles with the power option. What is the best way to go. I am going to the one piece glass but I am undecided about the power option. My daughters (14 and 11) think I should leave the manual windows and stock seat. They think the old school look and feel is cool.

sorry i have the stock windows, but i just wanted to mention that i remembering hearing that for some of the one piece windows, you can only roll the window down halfway. this may have been the older models or the cheaper versions, i dont know, but before buying i would ask a rep from the company about it, just to make sure. good luck on your decision, sorry i couldnt be more help

yea id say you're best bet is www.specialtypowerwindows.com but many others make kits, but i heard the same about going half way down with some companies.

OK I'm now in the process of installing a 1pc. power window kit in my '56. This is basically the Brothers kit. I say basically 'cause I ordered the 1pc manual kit and they sent me the glass for the power kit. Yes they are different sizes. I end up ordering the power lifts from the manufacturer, A1Electric, (cheaper) so I can have power windows. Supposed to be a bolt in... NO WAY. It's close but building these trucks ain't hangin' drywall. Going to have to do some cutting to get it lined up. See pic.
It hits where the cable is attached on the low part and will again hit at the top of the door when I move the cable mount. That's where I'll cut and shim. I thought the Brothers kit had a scissors type unit similar to the manual windows. Kind of like the one I linked to in my original post?

The only scissor kit I know of is from Autoloc. But its not yet avaiable, I know it in the works and it supposed to be a direct replacement for the crank.

Got a video clip yesterday of a guy using one of those hand held mixing blenders to operate his window mechanism. He put one of the holes on the regulator post to roll it down and the other hole on to roll it up. Funny as hell.

my grandkids think grandpa's old truck is so cool! they've got their own window. they can crank it up or down without anybody's help. and..nobody can 'lock' them like they do in momma's new car! they love the big, old bench seat. the 'furry' carpet. and.. their own vent window. life is good..to a child. aren't we all just children? just a little older, perhaps!-steve

ford power window motors have the same gear pitch.i have some pic's on my other computer from a article i read on the hotrodders bulliten board about doing it to a 51' chevy and it looked slick and cheap. ford window motors have been the same for years and get the ones out of rear doors as they are usually in better shape.

Update on my 1pc power window conversion. As you all know I was having trouble with the drivers side installation. It turns out the aftermarket door is NOT exactly like the original. The opening between the inner and outer skins is larger, the clips for the garnish is wrong, and the holes for the interior cover are too far apart not allowing the cover to be screwed in all the way around. The passenger door (stock) worked like a charm. Both are in...finally!!

Many years ago, I had a 60 GMC PU and wanted to install power windows. I removed the wndow regulator, drilled the rivets out of the window crank gear and removed this gear. I then took a power window motor from a 74 Cadillac and bolted the entire motor to the regulator using the gear on the cadillac motor and the original large gear on the regulator. I re-installed it in the door. I don't have any photos and I belive that I mounted one of the bolts on the motor through the interior door skin which was hidden under the door panel. I then installed factory style chevrolet switches and it worked great. (If you use the cadillac larger gear on the regulator, the window goes up and down at mach speed. The factory gear had to be left on the regulator and used with the cadillac motor and it worked great.) You might see if you can find an old power window motor and try this first since you will be removing the old regulator to install the after market power windows anyway. I already had the cadillac motors and only had to buy the switches. This set-up only cost me $50.00 at the time for the switches. The windows were still working when I sold the truck a few years later.

After sleeping on it, I remembered that the previous post is backwards, I had to use the cadillac larger gear because the GMC gear is geared higher and the window went up and down at mach speed. I had to use the cadillac gears from the cadillac regulator to slow it down.
