Decent Engine

***Edited by Moderator****(WTB posts are only allowed by Subscribers) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a....php?f=15&a=17

Any suggestions of somewhere in NC/SW Va where I can get my 4.3L (6-262), repaired reasonable? I want to get the truck fixed so my boy can have something to drive at college. it's a 99Sonoma, I believe it's got a blown head gasket. I think it would be cheaper to swap out engines, what say you?
Thanks,
Pete

Re: Decent Engine

If you've ever pulled a 4.3L out of an S10, it isn't easy - especially in a 4wd.... you can't get to the motor/tranny bolts unless you unbolt the body and jack it up. Then the oil pan hits the front diff if it is 4wd.

Anyhow, I think it is much easier to replace the head gasket! If you were closer, I'd say bring it over - we can work on it together and get it done in no time.

But, what is it doing? Leaking? Running too hot? Air pockets in the coolant? Those motor are notorious for leaky intake manifold gaskets.

Re: Decent Engine

Have you started it since then or no? I'm assuming no coolant left?

Mineral is in Louisa County, so it is kind of Northern VA.

Re: Decent Engine

No Tink, I haven't started it,it's been a few months so I haven't checked the coolant level either. I can though. You ain't to far north of Richmond. Mebbe closer to Charlottesville? I ride my Indian Chief up that way some in the summer. Thanks,
Pete

Re: Decent Engine

Check the smaller local shops and lube places, a lot of them do other work like you need. Also most junkyards have a mechanic on duty for a lot less than regular shops. You should be able to get that fixed for about $300.00.

Re: Decent Engine

I have yet to see a 4.3 blow a head gasket without having a cracked head or 2.
