How much would you pay??
I found a 72' short wheelbase step side, I looked at it today, here is the run down on it.
Complete new interior, after market seats, they are nice! New 350 crate engine, with 500 mile on it, it come with a warrenty, 36000, mile, 350 tranny, that has 500 mile on it, the engine is all stock, it has been changed over to HEI, the alternator has been changed out with internal regulator on it. All the body work that has been done on it was replaced with metal, pwr brakes, power steering, new tires and wheels, they are american racing wheels, chrome. the inside of the bed has been gutted of all the wood, and they guy welded in a piece of 3/16 steel checkered plate. the whole truck has been painted, looks really good. runs excellant, new exhaust. All new frontend parts, new shocks all the way around, new coil springs all the way around, new factory grill, been painted black. When I say the interior is all new, I mean every thing, carpet, seats, door panels, head liner, dash pad. I did not see any rust on the truck at all, other then your usual under the truck on the frame, surface rust, but none on the body. How much would you pay for this truck? It does not have factory ac, he told me to call vintage air and find out how much a system would cost and he will knock that amount off the price. So what do you guys think? Sam

all that and the frame looks like crap? Are the warranties transferable? Sounds like a pretty nice truck though... I have no idea on price, sounds like 4 or 5 grand...

Dirt dobber,
The frame dont really look like crap, it just looks like a dailey driver, you know what I mean! Hell, my 97 stroke has surface rust on the frame. I talked to the guy a few minute ago, he wants $ 11,750 for the truck. I don't think it's a bad price. He will knock off the cost of a vintage ac unit. I hopeing to get more responses from you guys to see if I am in the ball park with this truck or not, I am looking at three different step side's right now, all of them 72 models one for $13,000 one for $18,200 and this one, the one for $ 13,000 and this one, they are just a like except the bed on the inside, and one is red the other is yellow. So talk to me guys, is this too steep you think? I am not trying to justify the truck, but there is a lot of work into it already. Sam

Considering his offer on the air (and you putting a little leverage on him about installin it), $10K is in line IMO, as long as the truck is clean and nice. The Barret-Jackson auction starts tomorrow, and there are a couple stepsides of similar quality listed, so you can see what happens there, but buy it before the seller see's what happens if the bids start going crazy, he-hee!

Larry,
How you doing? I have still not had a chance to instal that alternator on my truck yet. I want to thank you again for your help with it! The auction you are talking about, what is it and where do I see info on it at? sam

If it were me I'd offer him 7,000, and see how he reacts. If he's insult then see if he's even willing to bargain other than knocking down the price for air. The air would cost about 1,000 ballpark, so that puts it down to 10,750. Unless he recently did a frame up on it that's too high IMHO. Not to mention, that welded bed could be a problem, since you don't know for sure how good of a welder he is. How do the welds look? Otherwise, sounds like a nice truck though. Take some pics if you get it!!!

Sounds to be fairly priced to me because if it had a frame off done to it the value should be $15,000+, but since frame was not detailed also $10,000-$11,000 is in the correct ball park. Guys you really better get used to seeing prices like this on these trucks as the value on these fully redone just continues to climb and when comparing what is essentially a new 67-72 truck at $10,000-$20,000 fully redone is a bargain when compared to the price of the new trucks and you won't turn a single head driving that new 2003 but you'll turn heads everywher driving a restored or Rodsteration of a 1967-72

Paul,
I agree with you on this. The 72 LWB that I have right now, is very very clean, was a complete restore 8 years ago, I paid $6000, for it, but the guy cut way too many corners on it. I know this, you got to sell your truck also not for just how much money in parts you have in it, but your time is a price also, you will never ever recoop everything. One thing that I do is research on these trucks, just about everyday, I am looking at them, and my favorite is the SWB stepside, and I believe I am going to go ahead and buy this truck, then take the one I have and swap out a few things between them. I know one thing for sure, if I buy this truck, I will swap out the trannys, I will put my 700r4 in the stepside. once I get every thing off of mine that I want and swap everything off the stepside to the lwb, then I will turn around and resell the lwb. Thats if everything goes my way, I am dealing with the guy right now on the AC, he sound like he is willing to work with me on this. Sam

Josh,
I second the $10k also. I'd like to come look at it and see for myself! (Don't worry, I'm in no position to buy another right now ) I'm not too far from you. Gimme a shout if you want. Jason

THAT PRICE ISN'T OUT OF LINE AT ALL. I'VE DONE A FEW OF THESE TRUCKS (I'M WORKING ON #13) & I'M NOT TALKING , DUCT TAPE,BONDO & RATTLE CANS EITHER. USUALLY IT TAKES ME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF $10,000 & 3000 HOURS TO BUILD ONE. I JUST SWAPPED ONE TO A GUY IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD FOR ABOUT $15,000 WORTH OF STUFF. NOW THAT MIGHT SEEM LIKE A PRETTY BIG PRICE TAG SO LETS DO THE MATH..... HMMMMM $15,000 - $10,000 IS $5,000 DIVIDED BY 3000 HOURS COMES OUT TO ABOUT $1.66 AN HOUR HMMMM I GUESS IT'S A GOOD THING I LOVE WORKING ON THESE OLD TRUCKS, & DON'T DO IT FOR THE MONEY.

I'll have nearly that much in mine before cab gets set back on the frame I think!! Of course, that is buying a new RAT. I think that sounds reasonable if the workmanship is there. Ask for reciepts on the parts he bought. That will give you the warm fuzzy on what he has mechanically put into it.

pricey imho
I'd say try and offer 7-8K at the most. It's hard to figure a price if we can't visually see the truck. If you haven't being lookin for a truck for a while, you might want to keep on searching. I would take my time searching for one, especially since you are willing to pay a good amount of money. Get us some detailed pics of the ride, so we can give you a better ballpart price....
If you're willing to pay 10k, I'll sell you mine....hehehhehe j/k |

truck
If you are spending that kind of cash don't be in a hurry.Cash talks and there are some good deals left if you look. That is not to say that the truck isn't worth the price.I have come across several nice well optioned drivers from $8000 to $10000 in the last few months.I also had a friend sell his 72 short bed that I was working on for $18500 cash and it still needed fresh paint. He bought a nicer truck for$11000 a few months later. The most important thing to me is rust repair. If you find a plain jane that is rust free it is worth more than a patched cheyenne super in my book.Fresh paint and options can be added but patched is patched.Plain C/10 step sides are the easiest trucks to find in a shortbed at a cheap price.Frank from the board has a very nice "rust free" 72 stepside body for $1200.$3000 for a new crate motor.$3000 new trim"bumpers, seat covers, rubbers, etc" $3000 for quality paint and you would have a like new driver for about $10000 You can buy and drive now what you can find or take a few months and build exactly what you want .Point is $10000 for a nice driver is a fair price and highly optioned highly detailed will sell for offer $20000

Well, guys, I didn't buy the truck! Was not worth that kind of money. I did make him an offer, but he refused it, I offered him $5000 max. When I looked at the truck the first time, I looked at it when he was not around, so I really didn't get all over it, well, we met, i looked all over the truck, and it is not no where worth what he wants for it. I left him my name and number, told him to give me a call, when he is ready to sell it. It was not nothing like he said it was. But it has a lot of potential.

I cannot believe that we are all sitting around talking about giving $10K for a 67-72 truck. I bought the red one for $685. Of course there is probably close to $5K in it, but I can't imagine anyone seriously paying that for it. Do people actually do that? I just can't imagine it. Now I'm working on the Blazer. What will a frame up on it make it worth? It will be nearly a 100% resto. Just a few creature comforts. Nothing real noticeable, but comfortable. Is it too going to be in that $10K bracket? Or will it be more? I can't believe anyone in their right mind would pay $18500 for a truck of this era. Not unless he had more money than brains that is. Just my humble opinion. Jeff.

RED71CHEYENNE (JEFF) I HAVE TO DISSAGREE WITH YOU ON THE VALUE OF THESE OLD TRUCKS. I'VE BEEN BUILDING THESE TRUCKS FOR AROUND 18 YEARS (I'M CURRENTLY WORKING ON #13) & IT USUALLY COSTS ME ABOUT $10,000 TO TOTALLY RESTORE ONE. WHEN I RESTORE ONE, EVERTHING (& I MEAN EVERYTHING) IS REBUILT OR BOUGHT NEW, & IT USUALLY TAKES ME ABOUT 3,000 HOURS. TO SAY THAT SOMEONE IS CRAZY TO SPEND $10,000 ON A FINISHED TRUCK OF THIS ERA IS WELL........ JUST PLAIN NUTS. PERSONALLY I THINK THESE OLD TRUCKS ARE THE PRETTIEST, MOST WELL BUILT TRUCKS GM HAS EVER BUILT. NOW AN OLD BEATER TRUCK THAT SOMEONE PUT $1200 IN PARTS, & THRU TOGETHER IN 6 WEEKS OF THIER SPARE TIME IS NOT GOING TO BE WORTH $10,000, BUT THERE IS AN AWFUL LOT OF MEMBERS ON THIS BOARD, THAT PUT $7,00O OR $8,000 IN THE CHASSIS & POWER TRAIN BEFORE THEY EVEN START ON THE BODY.I GUESS BY YOUR STANDARDS, A 40 FORD OR A 40 WILLYS IS JUST AN OLD CAR.
(HAVE YOU PRICED A NEW ESCORT OR ACCORD LATELY?)

I'm with junkyardjohn on this one...these trucks are climbing in value pretty quickly here. I don't think it'll be terribly long before the better, more rust-free projects go for $4k or more...I'd pay $9k or more for a nice drriver...
Moreso, I've seen plenty go for over $10,000. Didn't some at Barrett-Jackson go for over $30k?

John(junkyardtype), I don't disagree with it, I'm just shocked. I like you, rebuild them not to get money out of them, but to enjoy them. You said yourself that you put $10K into it, but rarely get that back. You are not doing it to make money, but to practice an art. There is not much in this world that I like better than making something with my hands. I think we all feel that way. I just don't see how someone could pay that much for something I made. Thats all. I will never get all the money I have sunk into the 71 back out of it. But thats not why I did it. My oldest boy asks me once a week when I am going to give him the 71. Every time, I tell him I will be buried in it. I'm almost 75% serious. I just like the trucks. I don't agree that they are worth what these folks are paying though. Mind you, if I rebuild one and someone offers me the money, I might sell. I'm not stupid either. HA!!
By the by, throwing the F-word in there was just plain mean! Shame on you. Jeff.

SORRY JEFF -- I DIDN'T MEAN IT AS A SWEAR WORD. 40 WILLYS & 40 FORD PICKUPS, ARE THE ONLY PICKUPS THAT I THINK ARE EVEN PRETTIER THAN 67-72 CHEVYS.
(OF COARSE THEY WOULD HAVE A GM DRIVETRAIN )

Personally, i think it is easier to buy a already restored truck then buy one for $2500 like i did. I have proably put close to $3000 in the truck so far, and it defenitaly isn't worth $5500. Don't get me wrong, i love my truck to death, but unless you are looking for a project truck, you should be money ahead to buy one that is already fixed up, even if the price is 10k (which should be one hell of a truck )

I spent some time thinking about how it would be possible to spend over $20000 on one of these and to tell you the truth I surprised myself
Base truck. Around here you can get a rust free 68-72 stepside for $1500- $2000. Condition of the interior is not important and neither is condition of the suspension, engine, transmission or tires . The body should be relatively straight and there should be no through rust. $1500 - $2000 will do that. We'll call it $2000 . $3000 will build you a hell of an engine with all new components except for a new block . What the hell. Lets get a new block too. $3500 for the engine. That $3500 will givwe us as many options in performance up to 450 HP as we want but for the sake of streetability lets call it a 400 HP engine. Still cheaper than a crate engine of unknown build. Add another $400 for auxiliary components. Call it $4000 even. That's for a carbureted 400HP small block ready to drop in and fire up. Transmission. 700R4's seem to be all the rage these days . Can we all agree that a rebuilt 700R4 with a new converter is going to cost in the $1200 range Exhaust. Headers and 2 ½ inch pipe . $500. We'll be generous there too. Having the frame sandblasted and powdercoated..Why you would do that I have no idea but what the hell. $500 Rebuild the rear end. Add a positraction unit. $700 total. New wheels and tires … $1000. New brake components using a disk brake front crossmember from a 73 up. $600. New carpet, interior trim , door panels dash, etc. $600. New leather interior… $800 New glass … $500 installed New suspension and steering components and bushings … $300 Lets throw in all new front end sheetmetal and a new tailgate $1000 New bumpers and lights $400 New radiator $200 AC $1000 How about a new driveshaft $300 Nice new shifter $200 Wiring $400 Everything else I am forgetting $1000 $5000 for a paint job. I don't even know of any body shops that would charge $5000 for a paint job and if I did I certainly wouldn't go there but I hear there are people who would. Can we call this a new truck ? Looks like about $22000 so I guess its possible. Of course the truck would be split in half after the divorce but what the hell. This all involved paying full retail and doing no shopping around or bargaining/trading but some people seem to shop like that so $22000 it is.
