Suffix Code

I bought a 87 GMC 1/2 ton. It has no trans in it. The guy said it has a 283 out of a 66 Impala. This morning I started up my 69 Fleet and it knocked for about 5 seconds and stopped. I do believe it time for a motor swap and rebuild the 350. When ever I buy and small block motor I dont believe anything till I see the numbers. Guy told me the 283 has a new timing chain, cam...and so on. It runs good. 3849852 is the casting number which is a 283. The suffix code is what I am having a problem with. I cant find anything in my books or on the net about what it is. FI222GF. Anyone got a book with this number in it and can tell me what it is out of?

And anyone got any ideas on how I should put my alternator on without mounting holes on the heads?

Re: Suffix Code

If your car has an automatic tranny, check the torque converter bolts. If they are loose or one missing, it will knock until you put it in gear. It's a 5 minute fix, and a friend of mine almost made that mistake. We were already tearing it out, when he said "hey I am missing a torque converter bolt". Threw one in it, and whalla!.

THe motor was built at the FLint plant, and the middle numbers I believe are the date, month and year. The last 2 or 3 letters refer to the engine. Here is a link for that.

GF looks like a 265 in 1955 or a 283 in 57 or 65. So might be a 65 Impala.

The guy told me it was a 66 Impala. But he could have been wrong.

Could have been '66 Impala. If the block was cast in '65 and put into a '66 Impala for the new model year.

Check the date code on the block and that will narrow it down further.
