carrier bearing help !
I broke my second carrier bearing today. it has happened twice in the last month. Granted I have a lead foot and all but come on. I am not mashing the motor or nothing, well ok mabe on the highway. Should it be breaking this much?
Dose someone make one other than the ones you get at the auto parts stores, kregens and such? These one are weak or something? Anyone got any ideas? heres a pic of where it is breaking at. thanks inadvance, Landon

I had a similar problem myself. I went thru two in two weeks. I found that some of the cheaper carrier bearings were made with real crappy spotwelds that didnt hold very good.
There was very little heat penetration on the spotwelds. I bought a better bearing from Napa auto parts, and have been happy since... Hope this helps.

Thanks danodmano, I'll check out napa.
Any other ideas? Could I put a solid drive line in the truck? I am thinking that the frame brace, would be in the way and I don't want to take it out. Would it work?

look for the ploy mounts, they look like they have better bases.

Just some guesses here for things to look at. From the photo, it looks like the bearing is being pushed forward. With that in mind, are the rear trailing arms in good shape, not rusted? Are the large ubolts that connect the trailing arms to the rear housing tight? Are the trailing arm bushings in good shape? Anything that would allow too much front/back movement of the rear axle housing may cause the carrier bearing to fail. Is the bearing getting fully seated when you install it? The only actual failure of these that I have seen is rusted trailing arms where the u-bolts attach to the housing. They started to collapse which allowed the housing to move forward. Just some things to look for and be aware of.

I will let everyone know what I find out. I am just learning all about these trucks, It is fun I would hate to try and work on something like my 2001 chevy duramax, can not even see the engine. OK not as much as you can see under the hood of my girls '71. Thanks again, Landon

IOf it is from forward and rear movement, check to see if the 2 shafts are sliding easily on the splined section.

the hanger style carrier doesnt have a slipe yolk in the middle like on our longhorns, it should just be bolted together. i had a lot of problems with that style carrier on my 1/2 ton trucks....without the slip & slide it works the hell out of the rubber. the heavy set up in the longhorns, & other 3/4 ton trucks seem to be a good setup.....mine has sure seen a lot of abuse! Sorry i dont have any words of wisdom on the situation, other than check the things the rest of the guys have mentioned. good luck....crazyL

I cant remember the name of that site, but I think that aftermarket carrier might be the way to go.... its built stout

Yea, it didn't fit. The part that mounts to the bracket is too wide. I am going to see if I can have it machined down to fit, but I am not sure if that will work. I will post something about it again when I find out if that will work or not.

Your driveline may need to be balanced. This can cause the carrier bearing to fail as yours did.
