Repro wheelcovers ?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Anybody know where i can find these in a repro possibly? The original ones pit pretty bad (well, they are 40 years old though), and i could only dig up one.

I know thousands of these made their way into landfills in the 70's, 80's and 90's (if we only knew)

Or does anybody have a stack of these outside their back door?

I may just go junkyardin' and see about the possibility of re-chroming a set if they are that hard to get (yes -- i know -- a set of 18" TT-2's would be so much easier and simpler to procure i'm sure)

I don't think I've ever seen those repopped. nice originals is probably the only thing your going to find.

and GMC to boot. that's a toughy......

Special-K, that's a nice site for memories. I happen to have three of the (as shown) $200 GTO 14-inch wire wheelcovers with the 2-bar knockoffs. The later wire covers I have, without knockoffs and with the big centers at $90 each, constitute a full set. I never through any of them away, just wish the hubcap fairy would pay me what this guy want for them.

I have been looking for those GMC ones for a while. I found some decent Chevy ones I am going to use for now. If I found some rough ones I may just swap centers?

I have some real nice Chevy covers.I bought some crappy GMC ones for $20 to use the centers from.They have some pitting,too.Mine`s a`67 GMC-look,but customized in a still sorta stockish way.I`m hingeing on whether to go with `67 covers or`69-ups.I don`t really want it to look like I`m trying to make it exactly original.Guys swapped hubcaps way back when without concern with originality.I better decide befor spending $320+ dollars.

Swapping hubcaps.....that's Old School, huh?

Used to be, back in the early days of hot rodding, your hubcaps/wheelcovers would be the same as your engine....supposedly. At least that was the unwritten rule of the day.

Heck, I thought it was just about the look....like Caddy "Sombrero's" on a Merc was supposed to be the indicator that you had a Cadillac V-8. Whodathunkit? I thought the smooth look of the sombrero's was the goal.

In the late 50's and into the 60's, swapping hubcaps was all about the look, like the 4-bar Lancer's on my '54 Ford. Didn't have a Dodge engine in it, but they sure looked sweet and sparkly as it rolled down the road, slow and easy, with the sun being reflected from each bar as the wheels turned. Sombrero's didn't do anything but shine.....

The fake lugnuts on these covers is all that can sparkle, huh? My police caps and trim rings don't even do that. Geeze....

K, i knew you would have a GMC hubcap hookup somewhere --

I don't have a swiss account, but i can't imagine stripping an old set and having them re-done would be too much less

Put it in perspective though, $320.00 wouldn't even buy one 26" Donk wheel with spinners

so almost seems like a bargain

Some years back an older mechanic gave me a complete set of 57 Chevy car wheel covers. At the time he had them on his old Datsun truck. I expressed interest in them for our 57. He said let him think about it. The next time I saw him he gave them to me. Would not accept money. I learned the caps came off a 57 Chevy car his son owned. His son was killed in Nam and his dad & mom decided giving the wheel covers to another 57 lover would be what their son would have done.
Finding "good" 40 yr old parts can be tough. When you do they are usually very expensive. The line from a credit card commercial goes "What do you have in your wallet"? j
Besides, who'd want 26" Donk wheels with spinners anyway?
