Alternator Question?

I want to take it apart to sand blast it, I am assuming you would not blast it with all of the internals intact? Does any one know how, I took the four screws out of the back but it would not come apart and I do not want to break something?

Thanks for the tips on putting the headers in from the bottom.

Re: Alternator Question?

You will be better off not sandblasting the alternator. The metal is soft, and sand will eat away a bunch of it if you're not careful. I would recommend sanding by hand with sandpaper.

To take it apart, you first remove the 4 bolts. The housing sometimes sticks to the field coil. A whack with a plastic mallet will usually separate them. But don't take it apart unless you know how to put it back together, you have to be able to hold the brushes in place to put it back together.

Re: Alternator Question?

Thanks guys, I am not going to attempt it. I use glass beads in my sand blaster because it does not scar to metal like sand, but it leaves a great looking finish.

Re: Alternator Question?

Oh it's not so bad! I just took one apart to re-clock it.....it took me a few minutes to figure out how to hold the brushes down for reassembly, but beyond that- it's crazy simple. You can do it !
