I have a 70 C-10. It has orginal 250 and 3 speed. I could put a 350 or 4l60 behind the 250 and add intake, headers, and carb for improved performance. I also have a 92 350 out of a 3/4 van to put in the 70 with the 4l60. The 350 is stock, but add ons are cheap and plenfiful. Like everyone else looking for power and gas mileage. I keep changing directions with this decesion daily and need to move on to get truck on the road. Chime in with thoughts no wrong or right answers, and good day.

I'm a stickler for originality now that I'm older, but I do have a 69 that I swapped a 350/350 in it and added ps and pb many year ago. Used to be a 250 three speed manual. I didn't gain any mpg but did get a stronger truck that was easier to drive.

Mpg on the original worn out 250 was about 14-15 on the highway and after the swap with a quadrajet I still got 14-15...

Agreed, if you're going for originality or trying to keep it bone stock for value reasons, you should keep the 250. i know there are several on here who have upped the mpg with mods. But from a cost/benefit basis, i would do the 350 swap as you will have more power and potentially similar mileage depending on the add-ons you choose.

I have p/s and p/b on the truck now. Is the 350 which is a vortec(92) any good? Keeping everything orginal in not a problem.

You should keep the 250 and send me the 350 vortec/4l60!!!!
Seriously, thought, I would opt for the swap. That is my plan. I have a 350 core, TPI set-up, still waiting on the OD tranny and a few misc engine parts for my 71.
Good luck however YOU choose to go!

if power and gas mileage is your goal, go smallblock cuz gas mileage is not much worse than the 6 and you'll appreciate having the power, no doubt....

As much as I like the 250, they cost a bunch of money to upgrade. Headers, intake and a 4 barrel carb can easily run $800 to1,000 by the time you get all the needed accessories. And that still leaves you with a head that flows like molasses.

If you're not worried about originality and cost is a big factor, go with the SBC. If you want originality, or want to dare to be different, go with the six. If you really want power out of a six, find a 292. And get Leo Santucci's book on Chevy Sixes.

Me, I have a 69 with a 300 hp small block, and a 52 with a mostly stock 235. I like them both, and they both have their place.
