Are 73-87 body parts made out of gold now??!!

Well guys, as you might remember, I just purchased a pair of factory GM PW/PL doors that are 100% complete (windows, door panels, etc) for $400. Well to offset my cost I decided I was going to try and sell my old doors on E-bay (keep in mind mine will include everything as well), so I called my local GM dealer to see what the door shells go for new and you won’t believe what they said….$689.81 a piece!!!!!! I cannot believe how much they have gone up in price…and that is just for the shell…nothing else!!! I think I might jut hang on to my old doors now in case I get another 73-87, there is no way I can justify paying those kind of prices! Just thought I would share this with the rest of you who might be looking for GM sheet metal.

-Jeff

Hi Jeff, Just did my Sub over about a year ago with new GM sheetmetal and the front fenders listed at $507. each!! Luckily my doors were OK, but I did need 1 barndoor. Sounds like good, used 73-87 parts would be a good investment. Ken

Yeah, I'll never forget when I started looking for fenders for my 86. Same scenario, I walk in to local GM dealer in New London, Connecticut ask for a pair of fenders for 86 Chev C10. He tells me $1096 before tax. I started laughing thinking he was joking. He got kinda pissed and went into a tirade about how they didn't want to keep selling parts for 20-30 year old trucks etc...

I did the body work on my 84 back in 1996, I paid $91 for each fender and $135 for a new hood all at my local GM dealer. I'm getting some good deals now because a friend of mine is the parts manager at a GM dealer back in my home town and I also have a good contact with a local AC Delco distributor. If I had to pay full dealer prices for all the parts I buy I wouldn't be able to pay for my truck addiction.

I work at a parts store, the panels we sell are the same ones that all the GM dealers stock too, our price is around 110/ fender (canadian $) and $200 door. Just to give you an idea, I repanneled the WHOLE truck for under 1500 cdn.

What does that mean? Are they GM parts?

No, the GM dealers around here buy their panels from the same MFG as we do, Cross Canada Auto supply, or Quinte auto body. It's all stamped offshore now. GM doesn't even re-package them.
