Hi All
On a smallblock chevy w/AT what is the diffence in application from these two flexplates? Can you use either but use two different starters? If so, which starter would you use for what. Thanks

168 tooth flywheel is 14" in diameter and the 153 is 13".

Which one you use depends upon your starter bolts. If the bolts are staggered, use the 168, if the bolts are straight across from one another, use the 153.

on the above which stater do you use with each flywheel....do you have part #'s or model numbers. I have a problem where my stater is 1/16" into the flywheel and skips on occasion and if i shim it takes it too far out.

bmg, Bobs 409 posted that info, but 168 t takes a staggered pattern on th e starter. the 153 t takes a straight pattern. If you have them mixed(small flex plate,& staggered pattern starter)....I doubt that the drive on the starter would even touch the flexplate. I beleive that a lot of the problems are due to the machining on the bottom of the block, & starter housing as well(factory tolorences). I have seen many smallblocks that needed 3-5 shims under the outside bolt only to get them close enough to the flexplate. For a quick check, a 1/8" rod should slide tween the OD of the flexplate,& the armature shaft of the starter(not loose, but not tight). If its too loose, shim the outer bolt only. if its too tight, shim under both bolts to bring it to spec. Good luck.....crazyL

I prefer 168 since I believe you get more torque to get the engine spinning. But then again the engine does not spin as fast so which is truely better the world may never know!
