bell housing?
I recently purchased a 3 speed tranny with a 4 5/8" bearing support. My old bell housing has a larger hole...about 5 1/8". Bolt holes line up fine, but bearing support hole is too large for new tranny. I think I need a new bell housing? If so, any insight on where i can purchase a 4 5/8" bell housing that will accomadate a 11" clutch, or could I still use the old bell housing?

I think you could if you are not going to be racing it or beating it too bad. I think I would try and find a machinist to make me a press fit adapter ring to go into the bell housing. LockDoc

Re: bell housing?
It would be cheaper just to find the right bell housing........don't......I repeat don't run with that oversize bore..............your front bearing in the trans will be destroyed in short order and then you will wish you found the right bell. They should be easy to find.

Re: bell housing?
Have you tried to swap the bearing supports?

Re: bell housing?
Assuming you want to keep the cast bellhousing for the side mounts, I think 1967 and earller had the smaller hole. You can purchase (i think) an adaptor ring or have one made, do not run with out the correct setup here, the tranny bolts will not center the tranny good enough to the clutch and will cause problems.

Re: bell housing?
The bearing supports correspond to the transmission input bearing that they belong on. Don't swap this out or youi open a whole nuther can a worms. Don't fool around here just get the right bell

Re: bell housing?
I must be missing something here...................but isn't that first picture the correct bellhousing? Why not use it?

Re: bell housing?
The 435 4 speed came out in 68 & used the larger hole. An older bell housing or a 3 speed will fit providing it,s for the large flywheel.

Re: bell housing?
I have two trannys and one bell. the rebuilt tranny has the smaller support bearing. the older tranny fits perfect, but needs a rebuild. was hoping to reuse my old bell, but it looks like I will be seraching for the small bore size.

Re: bell housing?
I think the break is 67-68, so look for a 67 or older, all the 6 banger housing I have seen are the same as small block too.
