Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
i used some 1/16th inch steel that i got from TSC and used a BFH to bend it into shape. I cut up an inner tube and put it between the straps and the tank. for the filler neck, i got a standard one from NAPA. It will get trimmed down once i cut a hole in the bed for the filler neck/cap

Looks good! And by doing it yourself it probably saved you a load of cash, and from having to bail your truck out of bodyshop jail.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
yeah, all i paid for was materials. total investment into getting the truck through body work and paint, around $1600.
so yeah, i'm happy from a cost standpoint to. This paint job should add considerable value if/when i decide to sell it. as with all things in life, everything has a price tag. |

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
okay.. have a little bit more for an update....as i as getting ready to put the intake on tonight i desided i better pull the what i like to call a "carbon catch pan" off of the bottom of the intake....turned out that it was a good thing i did...if any of you have ever done this to an intake you probably understand why i call it what i do....and i ALWAYS reinstall them too... here are pictures that should give you an idea....all the black stuff on the tail gate is chunks of carbon that built up on the underside of the intake

Good looking motor! just remember levi make sure you save a little money to be able to afford the gas all the way to the meet and back it looks like your truck budget might be eating all that up! lol

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
i dont mean to pry but what do you do for truck money? for me i just justify spending 250 or so a month on the truck fund since i drive an old beeter daily and dont have a car payment.. plus i sell parts on the side when i can.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
i build web sites for a living. the 9-5 job pays the bills, and the 7pm-2am job pays for the toys (and clears the CC debt).

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
CLEARS THE CC DEBIT MY BUTT, they just get racked up again on the truck, be honest we all know how it is! i imagine it would be nice to have some IT experience, i sell parts for a salvage yard and my jobs about a 7-to 7 job... the work around there is never done. but im trying to get motivated to go back to school! companies just know how to offer just enough money to hook you and make you stay!

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
Double hump heads? Doesn't that end up with the chamber "hanging over" the bore on a 283?

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
Maybe my vision is fuzzy- but they sure do look like '69-'70 double humps.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
well, the motor is in with a couple things hooked up, the grill is assembled. damn it looks nice! the letters are in the hood - what a pain in the ass! and the rest of the front frame has a fresh coat of POR 15 on it.
i have to say it's pretty sweet pulling up to my parents place and seeing a handful of cars there. especially when they are all in the garage working on something related to my truck. I owe a handful of people at least a nice steak dinner after this is all said and done, and probably a couple favors too. tomorrow morning i'll make a run to the parts store to get some last minute items, then the rest will go together. I think it's an ambitious goal, but i think it will be running and nearly complete tomorrow night.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
No. The double humps have a small combustion chamber. They even came on Hi Perf Vette engines in the early 60's. Besides, there's tons of hopped up 305's out there running double humps, so if they work on the 3 3/4" bore of a 305, they would be no problems on the 3 7/8" bore of the 283.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
BTW, I just looked back at the pics, and they are not double humps. Those are late 70's - early 80's 305 heads. The humps on a 69 -70 look much different.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project
67_C-30, I'm really confused now. The humps on the LH head in your pic look nothing like Levis. How many humpin head variations are there?
I have a set of '63 300/327 heads on the '68 GMC. Easy to tell on those.
