Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
I've had a problem with the starter on my '68 1 ton. When I turn the key, the starter engages and then continues to engage, even after you turn the key off. I have to jump out and disconnect the battery to get it to stop.
So, I first changed out the ignition switch, since that was the easiest thing. I put in an NOS ignition switch and it did not fix the problem. Next, I pulled the starter and had it tested. It bench tested fine at NAPA. I took it to a starter/alternator rebuild place and I went ahead and had them rebuild it. This company does all the work for the school district vehicles, etc. The guy was great. He let me come back there and he showed me how to rebuild the thing. Anyway, I re-installed the rebuilt original starter, hooked up the battery, and the same %#@%$# problem. Starter wont disengage. What do I do now???? I didn't think it would be a shimming issue, since I am using the original starter. What about the actual ignition cylinder??? Could that be broken and not turning to the off position or something? I would appreciate any help guys. Thanks.

By the way, the truck started and ran fine previously with no hint of this problem. After it sat for a few months, this problem just came up.

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
I would seriously look at the solenoid instead of the starter.

The guy who rebuilt the starter put a new solenoid on it.

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
Some times when they rebuild the starters they ture the mounting pad location on the starter. This meaning they file it down to be flat and surfaced to mount flush. When they do this you lose about a thousands of an inch or more which causes the bendix or teeth on the starter to lock with the flywheel and keeps turning cuase it can't disengage. Need to go to your local auto parts store and get a starter shim kit from the HELP "MOTORMITE" section the red carton packs. Start with the thinest shim remove your silenoid and install the starter. Pull on the lever which engages the bendix and make sure the teeth engage and there is very little play. If you were to install the starter without the shim you would notice it is forced into the flywheel and there is no play,,,,,, but with a shim it will slide in with a little play and disengage freely.
Hope this helps..............

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
I guess it has to be a shimming issue. But, the surface wasn't altered when the starter was rebuilt. I was sure it would just bolt right up, since it was the original starter that had worked on there fine before.
What about the ignition cylinder???? Could that be sticking?

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
Try charging the Battery sounds like a low voltage problem to me . I have had them stay engaged because of a low battery many times . Worth a try . Bob

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
I used to get them like that ever so often & finally figured there must be a short in the coils in the starter. The only way I could fix them was to replace the whole thing. It could be like N TRux posted & need shims but the starter keeps grinding even without the engine running & shuts off after you pull a cable if it hasn't burned itself up by then.

Re: Starter Problem Driving Me Crazy....Help
You have the little wires on the sol reversed, one is "S" from the key and the other is "R" or "I" that goes to the coil. if you swith them it will keep the starter engaged.
