Re: Something I've been working on...
sorry for hijaking your thread. this is my brothers current project, was just a injected 304 sb chev motor with decent single turbo. and its now being stroked to a 383 and upgraded to the bigger turbo.

Looks like happy time is going to happen. You'll have fun breaking drivetrain parts with that!

Re: Something I've been working on...
Just to give an update. I have got it running. I was actually rushing thru it trying to get it done for last saturday and I finished at 11 pm friday night. It runs pretty good, it makes 5 psi right now. It's not quite as fast as the smallblock i took out but I need to tune it badly it gets about 3 mpg, it's a touch rich. I have to get a new advance timing light, all it has is 18 degrees total to keep it safe. It spools about 2800 rpm which seemed at first a little late, but actually makes it quite manageable for normal driving. The blow off valve gets me lots of attention. I had barely had it out of the garage and some guy followed me into the gas station to find out what it was.
This week I plan on giving it 22 degrees of timing and cranking it up to 10psi and putting the vacuum advance back on to help with economy. I will keep you updated

Re: Something I've been working on...
Run premium gas and the detonation will be at bay. This is sweet, I too want to do a turbo set-up. I lived in Arlington, TX many years ago and went to the swap meet at the ballpark and passed up a single SBC turbo set-up as $$$ was tight, I thought about it and went back, but the dude was gone!! I was in HS when the Buick GN's and GNX's came out so I learned at the back end of a little sixes tailights that a turbo can make a zero a hero!! On a mild set up like this, I'd wonder if one bigger turbo would be easier? The duals will deffinately work good when you do build the 350 or 383 later. There I would splurge a bit and use forged interanls and then that motor should last for ever. (forged 383 rotating assemblies with forged pistons are about $1800, but you should only have to build it once!! As for the cam, comp and others have specific grinds out there for boosted applications, as NA cams tend to use overlap to help and in a boosted application, overlap allows for pressure bleed off, so give Comp Cams, Cam Help a call for the next cam. BTW when you put the timing to that, it is going to suprise you I think!! As for the spool up, do you think pipe size is choking it down or is a matter of the impeller design?? I'd guess a stahl converter that would get you right up to the brink of max boost would help as well. If I power brake my Cummins up to 1500RPM it leaves like a 6,000 lb drag car vs the granny mobile for a dead stop at idle?? Looks great, any part #'s suggestions, cautions, and stuff to avoid, besides ebay?? I am sure we would all love to here the details, oh and more picts, we like those too!! AWSOME RIDE, man, oh man, the wheels are spinning now!
On a side note, I was talking to Brad about 6 months ago about putting a turbo on my 250 inline 6 with the 4 barrel intake, header and a blow through carb, now I think I have to do it!! |

Re: Something I've been working on...
Ok the good news 22 dgrees of timing and 12psi no detonation, the bad news is that the trans is on it's way out, no big deal I have another just a pain to change. It wasn't in great shape before and the 12psi pulls haven't been nice to it but I think I'm gonna hold out until I have to change it, this is way too much fun. If it ever stops raining I'll get some more pics and maybe some video. It's kinda weird because it doesn't pull hard out of the hole, I can only make 7 psi in first gear, 12 in the rest. But when it gets above 3000 though it's see ya later. I have to get a wideband and do some tuning to lean out the cruise but it drives quite nice actually no stumbles or anything, makes me want to leave it alone and just take it to the track! Actually I may go to the friday night drags next week but I have to clean some stuff up for the inspectors. It seems odd to me that I can't have a mechanical fuel pressure gauge in the cab but I can have 17 gallons behind my seat? I know you are going to say something about pressure, but the fuel regulator pressure returns into the tank, all I hear is gurgling when I drive, and that is somehow legal. Funny funny

Re: Something I've been working on...
ever hear of turbo lag? that why your only geting around 7psi out of the hole. Still not bad. And quick question is that 305 still stock other than the turbo's???

Re: Something I've been working on...
When you put the new trans in get a converter, 2500 or so and you'll be able to spool up the turbo, but be ready to find the next weakest link!! The mechanical guages are unsafe since they bring the fluid into the cab, fuel and oil, as for the tank behind the seat, well I guess since it'sOE it is OK? I'd guess if you get your times low enough they'll require a cell and it'll have to go then! Love some picts and timeslips if you go. Maybe tow it in case the dying trans gives up the fight?!
My thoughts on turbo'ing a L6 is that the exhaust is right there, route the tubing up, attach the turbo and route the boost into a carb. It'll be easier with a header/4-barrel intake set-up and with boost a 4-barrel blow through carb will also be easy to find. Just money and some time, isn't that usually what keeps most of us from building what we want! Last edited by 70rs/ss; 07-21-2008 at 06:30 PM. |

Re: Something I've been working on...
70rs/ss sorry maybe my earlier posts weren't clear I have a manual trans. The syncros in 2nd and 4th are all but finished and it sounds like the front main bearing is on it's way for a vacation, that and it makes alot of noise under the floor at 5 grand and 12 psi, it is starting to worry me a little. As far as the gauges I'll prob take the fuel pressure out soon, definately if I go to the track they won't let me in. I just wanted to make sure the fuel pressure is rising pound for pound with the boost and it does. If it goes lean under boost rumour has it it sounds like both barrels of a shotgun going off under the hood when the headgaskets blow!!!
Ol'rover yeah I know about turbo lag, I've got a bad case. I'm experimenting with less boost and more timing right now to see how to fix it. The 7 psi out of the hole makes sense for the size of the turbos and it being a manual trans, makes it hard to load it on the launch, not that I launch it that hard. If it was an auto you could just run a 2 step to make it build boost at the line. And yeah the 305 is stock other than the turbos, it was what I had lying around and I figured I'd screw up and blow the first motor and didn't want it to happen to my 327. I'll try to get some pics and vid soon just too much going on these days I haven't driven it since friday and I'm like a junkie who needs a fix

Re: Something I've been working on...
You did say that it freshly rebuilt correct ???
If so & Im sure you already know this, but... Dont boost it too much too quick as the rings are prolly too tight & will bind under boost Looks like tons of fun Last edited by Spray-Bomb; 07-21-2008 at 11:57 PM. |
